Thread regarding Bank of America layoffs

Business + tech

Why are their attempts to get business and tech groups to work together unsuccessful? Someone mentioned that it was a nightmare, and it really is. I share the same opinion.

I think really what we can agree on is that it's not the people in the trenches making this difficult. It's an outdated and cumbersome framework put into place by management who have no clue how to implement something that actually works in the daily lives of both business + tech. Instead of helping the situation, it's pitting us against each other in an "us vs them" mentality.

The business treats tech as though we, in the trenches, make up the rules. Like we are deciding to stand in the way of business priorities. When software or hardware is at end of life, the business views that as a tech problem that should not impact their business priorities. Life doesn't work that way. The number of times I've had a business partner tell me they aren't interested in upgrading the servers (or software)....they work just fine as they are, is astonishing. I then have to explain that if we don't take the time to upgrade, we will a) stop being allowed to promote any change and b) at some point their app will stop working all together. So now I'm the bad guy for standing in the way of business priorities. I didn't make the end of life decision. And those rules apply to the whole bank, not just our application. It's beyond frustrating.

And those unmet business needs are fulfilled by subpar solutions that the business is able produce, since they do not have access to the tech tools at the bank. It's not like the business can wait for the tech teams to take on the projects with the official tools. Life goes on. Then there ends up being a ton of half baked solutions that are unsustainable. So no one wins.

There are not enough people to do the work. There are two people to cover more work than what was what was being done once 5-6 people. There is negative capacity so even critical work is not done. That leaves the official attention given only to an approved project or process. Business needs that go outside this process are unmet.
