Thread regarding Ford layoffs

The 54% AICP to 108% AICP was an effort in collective bargaining

Lots on here related to salaried union during the 54% AICP debacle discussion. But the outcome proves that banding together without a union works too. The backlash and outcry were far and wide. You could argue that the reaction to the 54% AICP announcement was an informal collective bargaining action. Salaried GSR and LL6 combined together to make for a formidable bloc that upper management could not ignore. The best part is that it was accomplished without union dues!!

And when the 135% to 54% disparity hit the media, it was game over. Kumar, Jim and Bill could not just sit idly by and let it go because the PR hit was going to be untenable. Coupled with GM's 200% of target bonus, hiring 8k workers and Amazon's timely announcement about doubling of maximum software position salary limit meant Ford's hands were tied.

That LL5-LL2 still get 135% is a stick in the craw. But they were looking at similar backlash from that group if the 135% for them had been pulled back.

Remember this for the future GSRs and LL6s!!

Ford is so jammed packed with non-contributing employees on the friends and family plan that they simply can’t pay competitive wages to attract and keep high quality employees.
When they manage to attract a good employee with false promises, they see that they will be forever swimming upstream pulling tonnage along with them and either leave Ford, or drop anchor and join the others collecting a paycheck for just showing up.
Ford has been shrinking in relevance for decades, every opportunity to turn the ship has been squandered.

@1unn+1flBqGhe - Is there a reason you aren't voting with your feet if that bigger bonus at GM seems important to you? Just pointing out it's a free market and if you have the skills you should head on over, it's the only way Ford will ever have a chance of getting a clue about it. Until they are forced into providing truly competitive overall compensation they aren't going to.

The LL5 to GSR discrepancy pales to the GM salary payout.
13% of salary was target.
Paid out 26%.
GM salary workers have gotten 25k in the past.
They give more, significantly more of their profit to salaried employees.
If I had known this before ....
Pretty insulting.
That is why they capitulated so fast on 56%.
Family .....
yeah, sure.

I've always believed that in a company that has one major set of people that are union (i. e. the blue collar assembly line workers) that the white collar should be unionized, as well.

Would I like to pay union dues.....no. However, it is not even funny anymore - never was - around the disparity between union benefits and ours, especially at the GSR level. Union employees have better health benefits (for instances they still pay $2 copay for most prescriptions and have less out of pocket and copay in general for their medical expenses), and can file for action against management for poor treatment or job changes they don't agree with. It would certainly level the playing field and stop of lot of the silly management games that go on within the company.

It's too late now for this to happen, 20 years ago would have been ideal. Unions are decried for being bad for business, but what they are good at is protecting workers from random acts of management being lobbed against them and dealing with people fairly and consistently.....and letting the employees have just a little bit of say in what goes on. Yes, I am aware I can leave anytime I want....but the larger issue point is why is that the default action/behavior for someone to have to find another job if they are mistreated or underpaid?

@1vvt+1flBqGhe The OP in this thread literally pointed that out. Which means you didn't read it.

I just want to point out that I re-read the note from Kumar again today and although the GSRs where doubled to 108% only the top level had their rate cut from 135% down to 108%. The rate for LL5 - LL2 are being left at 135%. Pretty clear it's just a win in name only for us.

If you really want to do things on your own terms, give no advance indication of your retirement plans. Submit your retirement papers, once accepted tell your boss.
Most people trumpet their impending retirement starting 5-10 years before the retirement date, it is funny to watch when key people say oh by the way I am retiring, my last day is a week from now. A guy in our group did just that. He was bypassed for opportunities his whole career because he was “too critical” in his current position; in other words he was the one doing all the work so his LL6 didn’t allow him to leave the group. They are still trying to backfill his position.

In my over 30 years in automotive I have never seen this happen before. I was pleased to see people form every age group and s-x / minority stand up the way they did. During the CHAT people really made their feeling known to the people at the TOP.
The people at the TOP want to reduce headcount gradually on their terms. Now the people let them know it will be on our terms. I am glad I was not the only one to vent at them on CHAT
I hit my 30-year mark next year. I plan to go then. Not the same place I hired into. A very much different company.

No free lunch. It would have totally slipped past us that took the VSSP last year. They are saving anywhere they can to pay for the way forward to be an electric car company.

OP it is a nice sentiment, however, your merit increases will be reduced to recoup the bonus. And there will be an acceleration of off shoring

If you haven’t had the joy of sitting thru the compensation planning meetings, it is easy to claim a victory, when it is just an illusion. Post again in 3rd quarter, if you still feel this was a victory.

Eventually, the "needed cost save" still will come from you. You just don't know in what form it will hit. Enjoy while you can.
