Thread regarding T-Mobile layoffs

Wireline shutdown

Rumor has it that T-Mobile is getting out of the Wireline business. Wireline will be shut down and existing customers will be forced to look for new Wireline service after contracts are over. Possibly the network will be used as a wholesale play, but that is also debatable. Lots of tenured employees will be laid off and severance packages are expected to be weak.

I support wireline, per a couple of techs 1st round layoffs due to be announced in May.
2nd round early next year. My understandings is a number of regional managers have arranged their exits during 2nd round.
Some domestic may be kept. They still have customer contracts for at least 3yrs. I'm hearing 5yrs before complete shutdown.
I heard rumor low vaccine rates among wireline techs is a factor. But it's just a rumor.
I don't know anyone in wireline that drank tmobiles kool-aid.
Also, Really not happy tmo took my work phone and said buy their service or find a new job. Tmo values in action!

I got the confirmation from a co-worker who is currently working for IP backbone (which is the IP wire-line) division in Europe. He said the international wire-line is going to be shut down and most likely the domestic will be as well in the near future. All hiring is stopped in wire-line.

The announcement was made to employees last week although it’s been out here for some time. Surprised they didn’t give us the axe in September of last year when this was all supposed to go down. SLT is holding back info to drop the bo-b maybe in April but more like May. Class actions are incoming. Confirmed!!! T-Mo is in for a super rude awakening. LOL! They’re not gonna know what the he-l hit them but their boards pockets are gonna scream bloody mu---r!

Severance is 1 week per year of service up to 6 months. Customers called it when TMo merger happened, Wireline went away like they thought it would.

Anyone from the “red headed” stepchild Wireline unit still drinking the T-Mobile Kool-Aid? Quarter and month end just around the corner. Buckle up everyone…the next 30 days should be quite the ride for us long timers!

TDMA POTS wireline and reselling it should go away, the economic rationale isnt there these days. Keeping the network and just using it for IP only makes sense.

Looks like TMo can’t get their talking points together for Wireline customers so they are holding off on the official announcements. Marshall tells us to just keep selling but contracts are slow rolled and we look incompetent to our customers when we can’t even get a contract for them to sign. My manager has been MIA the last few weeks when before it was daily updates on what business is closing. I guess we just wait it out and wait for the final shutdown to happen and packages to be handed out. Oh, if you are unvaccinated, good luck getting one of those Strategic spots. Probably all part of the plan.

Hate to see the Wireline unit go, but they have/had some terrible directors and managers. Jim Marshall you out there? Your dic*head attitude won’t be missed.

What is funny in all this is that the CEO in the last all-hands meeting 2 weeks ago was talking about "acting in a Magenta way" and how employees should call out peers for acting in an "un-Magenta way". Seems like the "un-carrier" has forgotten that their competitors ("real carriers") both have Wireline divisions... and that T-Mobile in surrendering Wireline is planning on giving away some healthy Wireline revenue to the competition.

"What do you mean by wireline?" Wireline is the data network division, consisting of the fiber-optic backbone, and the data products that traveled on it, such as Dedicated Internet, MPLS, etc. Product has been foregoing any support for products on the Wireline network since the merger in 2020, such as SIP/VoIP, and last year entered into a partnership with Lumen for wireline services that compete with T-Mobile's own Wireline products. The head of Product has been quoted in 2021 as saying "Priority 1 is to sell SIM cards, Priority 2 is to not distract folks from Priority 1". At the time of the merger, T-Mobile decided to not carry any of their wireless backbone traffic across the Wireline network in the manner that Sprint used to (Sprint Wireless was the biggest customer of Sprint Wireline), so that loss of revenue in Wireline, coupled with the lack of investment in new products for the Wireline division, has ki---d any chance for Wireline to show a profit. Huge sc--w-up by Senior Management, never would have happened under the old CEO of T-Mobile, who had come from a Wireline background at Global Crossing.

March 31st is the end of the 1st quarter, and a Thursday (the classic day for publishing pink slips). If you want to incur your layoff expenses in 2Q (assuming the 60 day notice requirements of WARN), do it on 3/31.

Where did this March 31st day come from? Would this only impact wireline teams?

I went through a few interviews for the wireline business and last week was suddenly told that they would pursue other candidates even when I thought that I was going to get an offer. Wonder if this was the reason.

Yes, hearing the same thing. March 31 is the day massive layoffs come for the SE/Product teams in both Wireline and Wireless. Wireline will be a devastating blow and will also include Sales and Operations. Meeting this week for the business Wireline Leadership group. Nobody will be “slotted” in the Wireless Specialist but will have to interview for an opportunity to join those teams. Also heard that all open headcount for the Wireline folks has been frozen. Tell tale sign big changes are coming.
