Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

As an SLS, am I about to be PIP’d?

I was ranked in the middle for years, then promoted to SLS recently. I thought it was a good move until I had to PIP a large majority of my team, none of whom should have been NI and NSI. Everyone knew the PUs in my group were wrong and voiced it. I noticed that other SLSs (hi po) PIP’d very to few to none of their team. I think I was set up to be the “bad cop” and they are going to PIP me this round then tell the remaining people that they did the right thing in getting rid of me and everyone should be happy now. Am I being paranoid? I started looking for another job last year just in case, but the job search hasn’t been very promising so far. I hope it turns around. I wish I never took the SLS position. I couldn’t sleep knowing that I had to PIP people who didn’t deserve it. I couldn’t look them in the face before I PIP’d them or after. My team treated me like a S-B after and won’t talk to me. Managers, DHs, and other SLSs won’t talk to me either. Now I’m losing sleep thinking that I will be PIP’d with no job to go to.

If you're worried then you will be PIPed. Otherwise, you would clearly know you're vetted.

I agree. I was also first time SLS in 2019 and i represented my team for PDS in 2020. I was naive back then. I didnt know the politics and how to “sell” you direct reports during PDS. Seems I led larger team, high % of NI/NSI bucket was filled up by my direct reports. I felt really sad and partially blamed myself for this “failure”. I had hard time to communicate PDS result to some of them because I personally think they did a good job.

Since that day, I started looking job outside. As supervisor, I believed this system is cr---y and not sustainable. Unfortunately I didnt get any jobs at this moment. However, I am happy that all my direct reports that were under NI/NSI managed to secure jobs outside and they extremely happy. I spoke and met them few times and ask for forgiveness because until now I feel guilty.

Since 2021, I decided to take up individual contributor role. I know it is more risky for my own PDS but at least i do not need to go through PDS discussion again. Personally, I will just “embrace” NI/NSI and choose PIL if it still offered. The best redemption for myself..

Yes, you were set up and will probably receive negative reviews by your direct reports which will lead to you being PIP'd / NSI'd.

First time managers in performance reviews are often naive about the politics that are played and are frequently ambushed. Welcome to the, "Don't Sink My Battleship" tactics used by the more experienced managers in annual ranking meetings.

We are all going to be NSIed this year no matter what. So, welcome to the club.

You pretty much have this whole year to land a new job. Then you can go PIP or not.

IF, what you are says no is true, I am sorry for you. You are likely one of the very few Management personnel, who show any feeling for the Technical personnel.

Might want to really focus on your job hunt. How long can you go with no salary?
