“Recognition” - Is it a Joke? It’s Tacit Bullying!

I’m working so hard day and night. But you know what’s frustrating me the most?

There are four members in my team, including my manager. I feel so sick and disgusted each time I receive and see a "Recognition" email, praising three of them ONLY (excluding me, always).

They frequently take PTOs while I work so hard. I sometime cover them during their PTOs, but what I get is a constant "Recognition" email about three of them, that is constantly sent out to the whole company.

The Recognition is like a relationship game. They recognize each other and other teams look at those “Recognition” emails and praise the three of them.

It’s nothing but tacit bullying against me, and has been going on for a year now. Literally, I’m sick of it!

It’s just so hard to believe that the company and HR think the recognition system is good for all employees, they keep running it.

Has anyone felt or experienced like this?
Don’t you think a Recognition should be abolished?

This is only a small part of bullying, I experienced this the same way as you. Worse part is that your manager show double standards, and scrutiny on you constantly and keep on shifting goalposts for your projects. My suggestion is to save all relevant screenshots for chat records and raise them through Ethicpoint. But the HR process is extremely slow as well…

Connected Recognition emails don’t go to the whole company, and yes, the system is very open to abuse. Don’t let it get to you, turn it around. If you feel under valued, go find another role. While there is a hiring freeze right now backfill hires are still open as a lot of people are leaving Cisco as currently there are some employers out there with a more competitive package but watch out for the culture, make sure that’s a good fit too.

Without knowing exactly what your job, but seriously think about leaving. The job market has been pretty good for awhile now.

I sat on this for 2 days. I had to come back.
I'm just sorry but if no one is going to tell you, I will. I managed and IC'd at Cisco for a long time during the good years. If you think your are being bullied, you are. Because you let them.
Build your value and walk the **** away. But don't sit there and expect fairness. That is what got you into this. Be fair, but don't expect it back,. Be strong, take care of the lesser strong. Sometimes that even involves firing them so that they find a spot where they are appreciated. Clearly you are not - or you just feel like you are not. Either one is poison and you WILL NOT come back from it. Time to go. Go to another team and start over (I do not advise that due to rumor and slander), or find a task/job, company and culture that fits you. You are not at it. Walk Dude.
You will find out if you're full of it or they are. Test the chute. If it works, you win. If it doesn't - you learn.
Don't sit and whine.

Hey dude, life lesson when people are faking it. Keep out working them, pick up their slack and eventually it will pay off. Someone will notice and you will be successful. Remember most of the world out side of the west would break an arm to have a cushy job where they can complain about rewards.

In five years; none of it will matter.

Think about your "team", five years; ten years ago. Most, most likely, you seldomly even interact with currently.

Teamwork is overrated and increasingly irrelevant in today's "I'm important; and my opinion matters" culture.

The truth is, neither mine, nor yours, opinion matters much to anyone, outside of (maybe) our immediate families.

The sooner we recognize that there isn't much whatsoever of "teamwork"; and trying to the seek the acceptance and importance of others, truly means nothing . . . the happier we will be.

Who cares; why try? Enjoy the now.

The "whole company" doesn't receive these recognition emails; they only got out to the team you report to.

It sounds like you need to find a new team because you don't fit in with your team.

Connected Recognition is open for anyone to submit, and the recognition limits are based on your grade. Managers can obviously offer bigger "recognition" than individual contributors, and directors can offer more than managers, etc.

Based on the emails I get, I can see who recognized the people that are being recognized. If they're recognizing each other and the manager is approving it, then you're not part of the "good ol' boy" network and your manager isn't submitting you for anything either. If the recognition is coming from above your manager, he's sharing the "team's" accomplishments to his boss or higher and leaving you off the list of people who contributed to whatever is being recognized.

I don't think anyone on my team has ever been "recognized" for covering for a team member who's been on PTO. That's just expected to keep our stuff going and someone will cover for me when I take PTO. He-l, me and another guy alternate being on-call every week for a particular project. We don't get any recognition for that and if I have to cover for him on his week for a day or two or three, it's no big deal.

I would suggest that you find a new team or find a way to make your team like you better. You can try asking your manager's boss during a skip level why you're not getting any recognition while your manager and the rest of the team are, but I can tell you that won't go well. I've watched someone fall on their sword asking that question.

Best thing I ever did was make a filter in outlook or whatever client I used before outlook was shoved down our throats, to auto delete the emails.
It is one of many rules, keeps the bs out. Because either you play the recognition game two ways which is the only way it can be played or you opt out. @OP If you are either old or nostalgic enough, you can make the comparison the the opening monologue of trainspotting, same applies for cr in a way.
Either way don't let it drive you down or assertive. Either you accept and ignore it or take action and find another position/employer

Wanna know a story?
Several years ago some mid management asked people of my team (including me) to do some a$licking video about a new bloody feature implemented in our processes.
Pure show up b$hit, you know what I meant. Me and my teammates we somehow organised something funny a week in advance and a nice colleague who does video-editing in his spare time did a well done edit.
All of us, except ONE did our part. The one who didn’t do anything, got informed only one day before in the afternoon and said to manager that she would do her part in exchange of some Amazon voucher. At the end she didn’t do a sh!t, just recording herself saying 3 sentences in front of webcam.
End of the story: people who took seriously the thing got a big thanks during the “virtual” *ucking meeting
People who didn’t care got away with some vouchers to do real shopping
