Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

When is VDI/BYOD happening?

I’m planning to purchase a new personal laptop at some point this year, but want to make sure it’s suitable if we are all forced to do BYOD. Or, if Wells will have some sort of device discount plan we will be able to use. Anybody have insights?

Yes, tech is affected.

Once you are a part of this new technology, your laptop won't be able to do any work locally. It will have none of the apps we use, except for the app to connect to your session. No office apps, no mainframe apps, nothing will be installed on the laptop itself. In order to do your work you will have to connect to your session.

The most likely scenario - you will use a terminal or a basic desktop PC in office and your own device at home. That way you’re not taking anything back and forth.

Any idea how this works if we are working from home two days per week? Do we still end up with a company issued laptop and then use a VDI-type environment from that laptop? Or will we be forced to bring our own laptop? Thanks!

On BYO devices it also includes a piece of anti-screenshot software too.

This is where the industry went years ago… welcome to 2015. You will install VDI, a virtual desktop client, not Wells software. It’s not quite the same from a keyboard, mouse or headset perspective but it kinda sorta works and nothing can get down to your machine.

Not that person however It is similar to a VDI, but it uses a separate technology by a well known virtual machine vendor. I am not going to say the name or brand. Each time you log in you’re logging on to a different machine. No data is able to be saved on the C drive you have to save everything to network folders you have access to or the cloud. All updates are done on the backend. If windows changes you’ll log out and back in then you’re on an updated copy of windows.

It's technically a small app required, and you would need to have an RSA soft token on your phone or one of the keychain models. The ones built into Windows won't work. It also clears the desktop completely when you sign out, you will have to save to network or personal drives instead.

If your personal device breaks, it would not be supported by WF. This will reduce tech headcount by a lot. They would only have the ability to troubleshoot connection issues on the app used to connect and then the session you connect to. Nothing on the personal side.

VDI is not the future solution we will use. It's entirely different.

They are rolling out VDIs now. They were supposed to be at 50k migrated by EOY 2021, but only managed 7k, and those 7k have a low adoption rate. Meaning, those 7k have the choice and didn't use the VDI. Like all projects here, it's a disaster. They have changed the end timeline now to 2 years out with steady migrations throughout.
If you use your personal device to access it, they Will install code and scan your device. They say its non intrusive....but go read the legal requirements you ignored when you allowed them to use your personal cell phone for BYOD. They left it open for them to do what they see fit if need be. I wont be installing HYPR, RSA soft token or anything else for work on my phone. If I am forced to use my own PC to work from home, it will be a sandbox environment that's destroyed daily.

WF is begging for problems if they move to BYOD. The move for cell phones was bad enough. Want me to do on-call support for prod release? Yeah no, not giving out my personal cell number. Even with virtual desktops they have to account for key loggers and malware on the host machine. How the fck are they supposed to do that without installing software on MY computer? Don't get me started on liability issues. How are they going to standardize docking stations at the find-your-own desk $hitshow?

It's not just a web link. It's a small client package for the product we use. It's available on Mac/Windows/Linux - but not sure if we will allow it for all of the linux versions.

It's not going to be for at least a year. But even then it's probably not going to be something where you bring the personal device to work and I think some states are exempt due to their laws like the cell phones currently.

Chase started this awhile back for some teams but was providing ~$1,200 stipends.

The cell phone thing was hilarious as any smart company wouldn't allow sales folks to port out the corp number to a personal account but that's exactly what they had me do! Came in handy w/ a free 3rd line and phone when I took my only known contact number to a competitor.

To the person who said the VDI is just a web link: then why do they require a certain version of Windows to be running? Why won't it run on Ubuntu?

Answer: because it's a bit more that just a web link.

Don't run Wells Fargo stuff on your personal device. Why take the risk?

I can't believe WF will not install software on your personal device if you use VDI. Maybe they don't do it now in a pilot program, but they would have to, at minimum, make sure your antivirus is up to date. Even if you're logging into a VDI, your laptop could have keystroke logger malware or screen scraper malware that would put WF data and systems at risk. This is why if it ever comes, I will buy a laptop for work and NOTHING else. Any software they install would likely be able to scan everything you do.

If it is an issue with the connection or apps on the virtual environment those are relatively easy to fix.

If it's a physical issue with your personally owned device, that is on you. That would not be supported by the helpdesk or by Wells.

I worked at a big financial services company that had virtual desktops and the experience was much better. You could log in on a browser just about anywhere and have your full Windows desktop environment. If you didn't want to use your own computer, fine, they'd give you a thin client laptop. But you at least had an option. At the office, they had small terminals that would log in whomever was sitting at the desk. Updates were all managed on the company's end without having to monkey around in Software Center and reboot 5 times. We need to get out of the managed hardware process.

So to the OP. Buy whatever you want to get.

Dunno about others, but my personal stuff works fine...it's the machines that IT has the ability to sc--w up that have functional problems and they are sufficiently locked down that the end user can't fix them. I'd much much rather be "on my own" than reliant on IT. They'll get back to you in 3-5 business days, maybe.

Printing will be changing in a big way soon enough. It will be reduced to a small percentage of employees as we further push into digital solutions.

You can come to an office and work normally albeit through a terminal or desktop. But if you want to do work remotely the current plan is BYO.

Not soon enough, my issued laptop is a recycled POS. A raspberry pi set up would be great for this.

Have employees pay for their own office supplies…check
Pay for their own office equipment like printers and headsets…check
Turn off access to those printers….check
Pay for their own office phones….check
Force employees to go to an office where all of the above are already located after they pay for it all…check
No increases for top performing employees because they already make too much…check
Force rank performance reviews…check
Only match 401k at the end of the year if you survive….check
Change bonus structure to a stock option that vests five years later…..pending
Have employees pay for their own computer….pending
Gaslight everyone into believing that it’s a great place to work….

I am in the pilot for WAVE (BYOD) and there is no software to install. It's simply a URL you go to and it connects to your remote desktop. It's actually pretty nice. I don't love that I will eventually need to use my own PC, but it's essentially a VPN you use and all apps /docs are in the cloud.

Yes if you connect remotely you'll need your own device when this rolls out. If you connect in office you'll have a terminal or a cheap computer to use.

This is relatively new, I highly doubt they are using the same type of system. There are no security issues with the rollout either.
