Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

On “working from home”

I think anyone who's claiming that remote work has been "proven" to be better or worse is wrong. There are some studies but they use estimations and proxies, carrying the same flaws as doing performance reviews based on lines of code.

We've proven that the big tech companies can go fully remote and not completely crash and burn, that's about it. Some people love the lack of commute and less semi-forced hanging out, some people hate onboarding on a new company as a remote person and so on and so on.

I personally prefer a company where everyone's on site. I want to be able to quickly resolve any issues in person, not over voice call or slack, and I think that an environment where someone can tap me on the shoulder when they need help leads to overall higher productivity, even if individual productivity suffers temporarily.

I with you. I spend 60 mins going to work and 60 mins going home, and I live less than 30 miles from my site. Not to mention once I get to my site I have to spend 25 minutes trying to find parking and then walk a few blocks to work. It's not worth it.

I like the flex model, but wish it was 2-3 days per week and up to us with mandatory ceremonies. 45 minute commute has me considering finding something that does not require that for me.

Oh please!

Apple is doing well because they have had excellent leadership and innovative products. They have nothing in common with Wells Fargo.

Apple spent billions on that giant office and is one of the most valuable and profitable companies in the world. All that office chatter must work for them.

And they have the numbers to back it up now. Physical proof that nearly all of their employees had increased productivity. The ones that don't are ones that should be cut and dropped.

Executives certainly touted our remote productivity when the locations were shut down.

“ Shoulder tapping is not allowed in most departments”

This is correct. It could be construed as se-ual harassment

Anyone who can’t wait to RTO is clearly “living to work”. If people didn’t discover there is more to life than “reporting to work” during the last 2 years - I’m sad for them. I do not need or desire to be micro-managed in order to do my job well.

I enjoy being productive and taking pride in my work. But I also enjoy my family, my home, my friends, my health, open windows and fresh air, the sun, working out, listening to music, my time with my children and my pets, flexibility, work/life balance, comfortable and clean work environment, healthy food in the fridge, and not being tied to my desk.

Happy healthy employees yield happy loyal customers. And our business depends 100% on happy loyal customers. I don’t guess there are very many people who wish they had given more of themselves to their job on their death bed.

Shove it.

There is valid proof from our executives. They have proof of the increased productivity of multiple departments. I have seen it with my own eyes.

Shoulder tapping is not allowed in most departments so I am not sure what you are talking about. They each have processes that must be followed and shoulder taps often get you on their sh*t list, or the request is ignored. Following the correct procedures is the way to go and if you are following procedures the request is distributed amongst a worldwide team and 'load balanced' so it may not even get worked on by someone in the same time zone. This is one of the most worthless posts I have seen for a long time.

Yeah, the problem with your tap-me-on-the-shoulder thing is that it's fine for most people. For most people it simply doesn't happen. They're the ones doing the tapping. The real 'doers' on the team all of a sudden can't get anything done because there's basically a line forming. No thanks. On to the next company.

In-person works well if you're part of a very small company, like a start-up. Everyone is close by anyway.

But when you deal with huge companies that have employees all over the country and all over the world, it simply isn't possible to physically get everyone together.

I've been at WF for 20 years, and I've never met MOST of the people that I deal with every day.

Agree. I also personally like to separate my home from the office. When I am home, I don't want to look at work or think about it. There needs to be some separation for me.
Although, having the option to work remotely is great, but not every freaking day.

Just because you feel that way means you should find a role that requires that. Not that anyone else should find one that doesn't. Just because you're codependent doesn't mean we are.
