I'm getting tired of people asking me why I don't quit since I hate AT&T so much, especially since the job market is the best it has ever been. I don't do it because there is a huge chance that another recession is coming and I don't want to change companies just to be the first one to get cut when layoffs start (and layoffs will start, just remember 2008). Yes, I am not happy here, but at least I have a decent chance of still having a job five years from now. If I leave, that chance reduces drastically.

Another excuse you staying with AT&T. One excuse after another.
There is a recession coming some day for sure .. . .. you may be waiting a while so you need to either move on and take a risk or learn to accept your situation without complaining. You should always have a backup plan in case of layoff no matter where you work and you must not have one. You need to be proactive instead of sitting back idly in fear that things may not work out.
Living in fear is no way to live. If you are so unhappy friends and family are asking why you stay, it’s clear a change is needed. Stop complaining if not willing to do anything about it.
No doubt recession is coming. Anyone who says otherwise has their head in the sand. I agree, stay with T, if you jump right before a recession, YOU will be first out the door. You need time in a new job and organization to develop relationships and establish your brand and reputation. That does not happen instantly. Good luck to you.
There is currently 1.8 job openings per available worker. If ever there was a time for a change in scenery, it's now. Of course, there might be opportunities for a change in scenery within AT&T via transfer.

Just have to show up on time, except for days on FMLA

With gasoline at $4.75/gal. and almost 8% inflation rate and no relief in sight, I agree with you for staying on the job with T. I still think you should keep looking elsewhere, though if you're not happy at AT&T. There are always issues in the economy, in corporate america or even life in general. Now is the time to be looking for another job. Positions are still going unfilled since the great resignation. A job is out there waiting for you...go get it, but be selective!
There is always a coming recession that someone is predicting don't let that dictate your decisions. Let taking care of your family be the guiding principle which means you will have to ignore a lot of the noise. Good luck to you
Frankly, it sounds like you’re looking for excuses so you don’t have to take certain risks in your work life. If you hated the job 14 years ago during the recession, and the ‘possibility’’ of another one coming keeps you frozen in place, that suggests you have no interest in any risk-taking even if it could result an increase in salary or promotion.
Perhaps you should figure out ways to become more satisfied with your time here at ATT so that it can be more enjoyable and complain less, if that is possible.
Why don't you quit?
Happiness is a state of mind. If you’re not happy here , chances are you won’t be happy anywhere. I’m basically a glorified ditch digger for att but I’m happy. I go home every night. I have a roof over over my head. I’m healthy. I have food in my belly. I have friends and family. Learn to be grateful for what you do have. Say what you will about att but it pays well enough for the things you don’t just need but the things you want. . I hope to be digging ditches here until I’m 70. In the navy , I didn’t get to go home every night. It’s all relative bro. Be happy. Your alive and hopefully healthy to enjoy the rest of your life for years to come. Att is a job , not your whole life.
With the great resignation, there were another 4.5M people the left the work force. There is an estimated 5M vacant jobs in the US. Find a job that makes you happy, there are plenty of opportunities.
...and what was the excuse last year? Or the one before that? Your current 'reason' is becoming popular now, but you didn't 'just' become unhappy here. Say what you want, but don't stick your head in the sand. At least be prepared. The longer you've been around, and the higher your salary, the more of a potential target you are, unless you are one of the few who actually gets things done.
