Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Is Virtustream going going gone ?

There was one other revelation during Wednesday’s conference with Judge Koeltl: Dell’s attorney, Michael Burkhardt, said employees of its Virtustream division are being laid off immediately. Virtustream writes and distributes software that enables service providers to set up an enterprise-class cloud infrastructure, and lets enterprises set up their own private cloud infrastructure as a service offering. The other major players in this field are Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud.

Dell did not comment on this news, and Burkhardt did not respond to my request for a comment as of press time.

It will be gone. They took a downward turn a couple of years ago under the new management team and couldn't recover.

Judging by the salaries of the Virtustream SWEs it does not look like Virtustream writes much new code. Mostly it is maintaining old codebase introducing minor modifications which are handled and tested by relatively unexperienced SWE/testers. So it was bound to come to an end. In Boston there was a company Vertica which was in the same operation mode for years until it was bought by MicroStrategy and that was the end of it. Every codebase has its beginning and its end..
