Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Not everyone is unhappy

I have several friends who are happy to go to back to work on campus. Some people like the separation of work and home and being with other people. I don’t work there anymore, but if I did, my only complaint would be if I couldn’t have my own dedicated workspace. I hate that open office/‘collaboration’ office concept where you compete for desk space each morning.

@5zwj, work 4 hours a day? Have you lost your mind? I finish my work in under 2! Seriously though, you suck as a human.

Maybe so, but I would guess that several of you want to stay home so you can work 4 hours a day and spend the rest of the time watching Netflix.

@5qme, I am a Dr. in a high visibility function, and I assure you that I am NOT in any way excited, pretending to be excited, putting on a fake a smile, or spewing words or encouragement to echo the leadership's stupid message of we are better when we are together. With that said, I am responsible for my own feelings, wants, and needs so I am working on changing my situation. I am not expecting Nike to bend to our demands or even listen to what the majority of us want; that is on each of us as individuals.

It seems to me that everyone that is happy to go back is either 1. A new employee within the last year or 2. A director or higher that is supposed to act excited to go back. Everyone I know not in these two groups are not excited. You can see the leaders lying through their teeth.

Going back to the “open office” environment at Nike - otherwise known as Freestyle. It’s a horrible concept, authored by WD+C. Developed back in 2015/16, under new leadership for a new org., with way too much funding, headcount and looking for a direction that would support its reason for being. Amazing that freestyle still exists. A perfect environment to spread germs and expose others. Not to mention a number of other problems associated with the concept. Of course, executive leadership never self-adopted, as they wanted their private domains.

@3why, first, and more importantly, congratulations on your new gig. Truly, happy for you even if I do not know you. By the way, right behind you hopefully in just a day or two with the same thing - new job, fully remote, and higher pay. Second, I am in total agreement as to the reason many people wanting to go back to campus 😉. For me, it is the opposite - I do not want to be away from my family.

I know people that are happy to go back, too. They all have one thing in common: they’re trying to escape their spouse and/or children. Don’t penalize everyone because you made poor choices in life, and can’t tolerate the home life you made for yourself.

Side note: just got a remote job with a 40% pay increase, and better title ✌️

Exactly! Let me commute to the office every day, and NOT sit at my desk to get actual work done. Doesn't seem to make sense. However, I do miss the casual bump-ins or "hey" as you're crossing paths. Pretty minor to the benefits of WFH.

What I am concerned about is my productivity has really increased while WFH. Once I'm coming back to the office, it will undoubtedly decrease. I have a mechanism to track purely out of personal curiosity, but I wonder how common this might be for others?

Asking professionals to work in literally the same type of environment as call center workers is not exactly a recipe for happy employees. But that’s how most employees are structured on campus. Very few have a “dedicated workspace”. It’s miserable but few people are willing to say so out loud.

Meanwhile the same people who want to tell you how awesome open offices are noticeably aren’t willing to work in an open office space themselves. It’s so stereotypical that it’s actually funny. It’s also reason #738 as to why I don’t like or trust Nike’s “leaders”.

of course there are those who are happy to go back. there usually exists people on both sides of a decision. i don't know why folks who don't work here anymore insist on posting here...seems weird.
i also don't understand why i'm expected to provide separation from work and home + sitting there so others can be around people. seems like those folks could go to a coffee shop or rent one of those shared office work spaces (both would be quieter, in my experience).
well before covid, i was the one working almost anywhere BUT my desk to get away from the noise and distractions. is there a meeting on the books? great, I'll be there. but i don't need to sit in the same room and barely hear my own thoughts in order to appease your working style. and now that there's (still) a pandemic, i definitely don't need that.
you've given me 2 years of sweatpants and dog walk breaks and I don't know how i can go back
