The pensions and benefits group made very bad decisions during the early 2000s and NYNEX pensions were woefully underfunded compared to Bell Atlantic and GTE. That was why the decision was made to move to a cash balance plan following IBM's moves. This should have been a criminal act and demonstrates why you can NEVER trust senior management or the board of directors to do the right thing. Do what you can to take care of you, the company ALWAYS takes care of the top people and itself.

The pension plan will be sunsetted and migrated to individual retirement accounts in 2023 as lump sums. So this whole topic is a moot point.
