AK, another C-Suite occupant, and a VP all shilling for Salesforce & Slack. Remember when IBM shilled for no one except IBM?

@2hgz+1g5SzDI5: Most of us end up working in a similar fashion except for the play time. For us, that time gets used up by all the meetings.

Put your slack and email into a VM and turn off the screensaver in the VM and leave slack in the foreground of the VM. This way, it looks like you are always present.

When you need to get actual work done, you can close the VM remote display and now you have zero interruptions. Only look at the accumulated slack messages when you are not working - perhaps once or twice a day.

Same with phone. Check them no more than twice a day - once in morning, once in late afternoon. 90% of it is drivel, and most of the other 10% is either not urgent or will have been solved already.

You'll be amazed at how productive you can without all the ding-ding-ding concentration-destroying interruptions - you can get a whole day of work done in an hour or two of focused work.

schedule:
8am think about what to do this morning while having breakfast
9am work uninterrupted for an hour
10am check slack/email/voicemail and reply to messages
11am do whatever you want for 2 hours - perhaps 9 holes of golf
1pm think about what to do this afternoon while having lunch
2pm work uninterrupted for an hour
3pm do whatever you want for 1.5 hours - perhaps walk the dog
430pm check slack/email/voicemail and reply only to urgent messages

The magic is to have 2 completely uninterrupted hours of focused work, but they must be completely uninterrupted. Leave the house and leave your phone behind if you have (non-work) interruptions at home.

I guarantee that you can accomplish more than your peers with 2 hours of completely uninterrupted work and still have 4 hours of playtime during work hours.

I can't believe anyone would prefer Sametime over Slack - Sametime was the worst message platform I ever used. Slack is fine - overload is an issue but you can fix that by just leaving/muting channels that aren't part of your workflow.

Sametime was cr---y software that got thrown into one of our bargain bins of unloved cr-p that HCL bought for pennies on the dollar. Slack got bought by Salesforce for 27.7 BILLION dollars, or about 0.8 Red Hats. Apparently the market had an opinion on which was better.

Slack is an overload of useless information keeping people from doing their jobs.

Fu----g managers…they e-mail you, they SLACK you, then try and call you! They have nothing better to do than harass the folks in the trenches who are doing all the work. It amazing they can even wipe their as--s!!!

I never thought I would say this, but I miss Sametime.
Slack is horrible. Nobody even signs in anymore it's so bad.
