Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

EMIT is the only profitable org in the company

EMIT! We are core to the company’s success, yet we, the smartest in the room, are disregarded by the rock scientists

I work for EMIT and I will say.

  • We are not profitable...that is a stupid troll comment
  • We are not the smartest in the room, we don't pay enough to get/keep the best and brightest IT talent and the scientists that work for this company are plenty bright.
  • It is very hard to promote someone with technical skills to CL26 (yes that low), so everyone goes management and loses all technical skills
  • We are not allowed to have a VP with any IT experience or even remote technical knowledge
  • We are hobbled by poor decision making (or lack of decision making) by our management. We are on old productivity software because no one in EMIT felt that they could approve an obscure risk with Office 365. It got punted upline from one manager to another until we had to ask the CEO.
  • We are not in charge of the Inside ExxonMobil homepage, that is P&GA.

@nsv+1g66ubrY the business ends up with self-driven bad decisions because EMIT has historically done a terrible job around putting the wrong people into leadership positions. Their management is so self-absorbed that all they care about is filling their ranks with yes-men, yes-women, and yes-they/them (look how inclusive I am!). This results in their senior people not actually caring about learning or understanding business needs or establishing credibility with their (let’s face it, similarly promoted) leadership. That ends up with no trust, no credibility, no partnership, and most significantly no accountability on either side, leaving the worker bees on both sides with bad products at best, and unusable new systems at worst.

OP, have you ever seen any of our financial report? Have you seen EMIT making a profit there? EMIT will always be, forever be, an expense to the corp. A liability in our balance sheet.

The biggest impediment to IT is the business making bad decisions. Like "Deploy service now with no budget for training or conversion". Or the attorneys saying we can't use Office 365 because of secret warrants. Or the business making decisions to use a specific software package without any consultation with IT on whether it will work or fit in our environment. Or, the business not wanting to change their processes and actually utilize the software features, then complaining about how the software is bad.

I agree the new home page is not as good as the old one, but that's probably a consultant's design.

I don’t think you all understand how little choices EMIT has in making decisions. Even search bars. Everything is driven by the business and approved by the business. If EMIT had its way, we wouldn’t waste time on an internal homepage. But that’s not what the business wanted. If the business is going to micromanage IT to death and not let us do our jobs, then sure, might as well offshore us or outsource. But if you don’t live under a rock and see the value in what IT can do for a company, then yea gtf out of the way and let us do our job. While pay is a main driver in attrition, the lack of creative expression from top EMIT talent is a huge factor too. Funny how these people are valued by some of the most creative companies in the past decade. It’s almost as if the IT people, in general, know their sh-t and the business should stick to their domain. I don’t tell you what chemicals to use. Don’t tell me what IT projects to work on. I’ll ask for your opinion and do user testing, but it should be my choice at the end of the day as for what to do.

IT should be outsourced.

That new intranet home page is a waste of money and I was embarrassed that EM would have a person waste their time changing the page so we all had to figure out how to do things that were much simpler a week ago.

Then I noticed a comment at bottom of new home page congratulating the “Team” for their new home page. Absolute shame that EM paid more than 1 person to work on “upgrading” a perfectly functional home page.

Misplaced priorities for an oil and gas company.

Now I have to get back to work using an outdated version of Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint because our technology is so old, but we have a new home page. #wearewinning

EMIT profitable? You have to be kidding. Properly working IT is biggest obstacles to getting work done.
