Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Will Ford hire Canadian Engineers through GC / H1B sponsorship?

I am currently at a pretty big tier 1 but I have a friend who is going through the process at Ford (went from TN to H1B last year) and another friend who works at GM (granted he is a manager) who went from TN to H1B and is now on his GC.

I currently work on a TN but would consider the jump if I didn't have to do the TN visa rather be considered straight up for H1B or GC.

Thanks in advance for any helpful info

@1idq+1g8yLQer When I was hired, I was told by my Ford team lead that they had spent time trying to fill the position with American workers to no avail. The people willing to fill the position didn't have the required technical experience or knowledge, and it seems the talented people didn't want to move to Detroit to earn a subpar salary.

For Canadians, the positions at Ford are way better than for Americans. The currency exchange boosts the salary around 30%, Windsor is a nicer city than Detroit and just 15 minutes away from Dearborn, and lets not forget about Public Health Care in Ontario. Plus the chance of converting (like OP"s intentions) the TN visa into an HB1 with a GC.

The last reason was the main motivation for me to take the job at Ford. I was already making a similar salary in Canada, living in a nicer place, but that was an opportunity to access, in time, the whole American job market.

It is disappointing how many H1Bs Ford hires. Why not put American workers first? Oh yeah, because it is in line with their go woke go broke strategy.

@OP. I know a few cases that left Ford because the company was not interested in sponsoring them. They found other companies willing to do that for them, so they switch jobs and never returned.

Maybe as a contractor at Ford, the agency is willing to sponsor you. I know at least one agency (MSI) that offered the H1B option to their TN employees. Good luck OP!

"What's the benefit of H1B over TN?"

TN visa in a non-immigrant intent work visa meaning you cannot apply for a GC whereas H1 visa is a immigrant intent work visa and a path towards a GC.

You can't apply for a GC while on a TN

OP here. Just to clarify, my current employer is a no-go regarding sponsorship thus my post. I am also interested in other companies that might provide a sponsorship opportunity outside of Ford or the big 3.

Background is Mechanical Engineer (degreed in Canada and Canadian born).
