Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

I don't see the logic here

Employees with extensive experience who have been loyal to the company all this time are being replaced by young employees who often get paid even more but who have no interest in staying here or learning how to do the job. Where is the logic in that?
The manager did everything to perfidiously get rid of my colleague and replaced him with a newbie who does not know what he is doing, but is paid better than the colleague who left.

What was the logic behind removing cubical walls where any noise annoyed everyone “to improve communication?” Because other id--ts did it. None of these companies either leveraged endless research already done for them nor did they do due diligence with their own research.

Clearly the older executives are no more likely to learn something new than the older engineers, and let’s face it, most older engineers haven’t learned anything in ages. The axiom that it takes 10,000 hours to become good at something means you need to spend a huge amount of your free time building a truly new skill set which most older people don’t have.

Unfortunately you see kids straight out of college without even the most basic skills in functional decomposition and refactoring and since few older people at Cisco have these skills (hey, why don’t you cut and paste this 100 times? It’s much easier to fix the same bug 100 times than 100 different bugs and meet your director’s annual bug fix rate to get a bonus!) the new kids are trained to be as useless as the less expensive older people they’re replacing. It’s a massive disservice to the employees, shareholders and customers but “it’s the new way of thinking” and the bonuses flow freely for the agreeable.

age is not diversity inclusion category. cisco wants to be like apple/google/facebook by having a low average age group, which inturn attracts other younger folks to the company. most 25yr olds, myself included don't want to work with boomers aka "our dads" in the same company.

The only issue with this notion is the difficulty in obtaining jobs after a certain age. Many people are trapped in their current role due to age discrimination.

Truth be told, a 3-5 year tenure is best for the employee and employer.

The employee gets to learn, stay only as long and they are engaged, and then have the financial and experiential benefits of moving. The employer gets fresh energy and new ideas.

The romantic notion of a long career at a new place is obsolete for all involved.

I think a lot of older employees stay for decent money, very little work, and work-from-home (aka. gym, mow the lawn, watch Jerry Springer).

A senior colleague of mine was invited for a “career development “ talk by our manager last week. At that chat he was told that he won’t be promoted because “deserving a promotion” has nothing to do with being promoted . Who gets promoted has to do with the manager’s “priority” . The manager did not elaborate what defines her priorities. I have never heard a more demotivating statement from a member of management to her team, especially to someone who writes patents for Cisco. That colleague is a male member of a minority group - this is the scene in Cisco U.K.

Makes perfect kingdom sense to me. Don't know "where" you are referring to, but Nathan did that in the GES DC space all the time. If you didn't bow to his every whim and always agree with him, he got rid of you. Doesn't matter that he presided over the worse DC year over year decreases in recent history.

Diversity matters, not knowledge. Kissing bu-t matters, not intelligence or ability.
