Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

No one could have foreseen the collapse of DIRECTV or WarnerMedia, RIGHT???

Well, except maybe every middle class parent since 2015.

  • Me: “Hey kids! I got us $10 DIRECTV and FREE HBO Max.”
  • Kids: “Hey Boomer, YouTube, TikTok, Vine, Instagram are ALL FREE! Plus, I watch them on my phone and have no need for your silly set top box! I am watching my classmates eat TidePods and have no interest in your 40,000 titles of Tom & Jerry and Abbot & Costello reruns!”

I think the OP meant to write:

'No one could have foreseen how T would destroy both DIRECTV and WarnerMedia, RIGHT???'

Not to mention Xandr, Uverse, and pretty much everything else that's run through T's digestive system only to drip out the end into a stinking puddle.

People are under the illusion leadership with golden parachutes , care about misadventures, they do it because at the time they circle jerk each other into thinking it's the smart business decision. But it's not their money... They just cut more jobs if they made a mistake..

It was a bandaid for lack of investment in the plant. If customers moved to directv which had a loyal following and the highest customer service scores. They would then be able to strip the TV from the line at least doubling the speed until they laid more fiber and catch up to Comcast speeds. BUT, we AT&T’d the he-l out of that idea. Pi---d off directv customers, new customers and they left in large numbers. And we did not invest in the plant to bring faster speeds to customers which drove customers to the competition. Then as we were losing customers Dandy Randy said the company was not worried about losing those customers as the focus is on serving and retaining more affluent customers. And we kept raising prices for slower speeds and older technology. Definitely a winning game plan that got us where we are at…. Behind the competition. AT&T, we keep the network running in spite the company’s best efforts.

Sure, you can!

Have to say I thought the same thing back then. The song and dance from senior management when DTV was purchased was "we're buying them for their customers". Remember Bundles? I Guarantee they knew it was a fast-shrinking business.

WB was a purely arrogant move that resulted in (as Snoop would say) "Drop it like it's hot"

"I laugh at those who think boomer is an insult."

No one here suggested it was an insult. It sounds like you are happy with what you have. Good for you, but no one asked. I am half your age and can buy everything you have out of my checking account. Somewhere, someone half my age can probably do the same for me. The best part, though, is I didn't waste 37 of my years of my life at AT&T for a few hundred K to boast about lousy assets. Enjoy your weekly highlight of dining at Cracker Barrel.

Your kidding. Right?
Why would anyone spend billions on a dying delivery system such as Directv with streaming gaining steam.
How did t think they could improve TW offerings and then sell the product to the competition of streamers, cable providers and etc. Besides t has ZERO in house talent that could successfully manage this asset and after Stankey destroyed the company, morale, fired the knowledge base - incredible.

I laugh at those who think "boomer" is an insult.
Yea, I'm a "boomer".

Retired from AT&T for 6 years. 37 years in. Retired at 55.
Tomorrow AT&T is going to reimburse me $427 for my health insurance.
I've ATVS. An 18' Crestliner Fish Hawk and a 20' pontoon. I'll have my people bring the pontoon out to my dock next week. The fishing boat is at my cabin in my 30X40 pole building with the tractors.
My cabin sits on 80 acres. Paid $14,000 for it. Now worth $180K. But I don't need the money.
A lake house and 80 acres with a cabin on it 2 hours away.
7 figures in my 401K/IRA.
2 2019 vehicles bought new.
Go out 4-5 times a week for dinner.
Go to the Caribbean or Mexico twice a year.
I pay folks to plow my driveway and change my oil. No lawn to cut as I live in the woods.
Call me a boomer all you want.
I am, and I'm winning the likes of what you'll never see.
Your jealousy is showing.
Insult away, It's Ribeye night at the local Restaurant.
Please work some OT to keep SS solvent.
Just just a 5.7% raise.

With risk, if you fail, fail fast. Guess leadership missed that memo.
