As a supervisor I am amazed that people don’t realize I will read their text messages and IMs. Thanks for self identifying who I should PIP.

Plus, nobody is that clueless. It would literally take five seconds to forward that to HR and poof. No more job. Period. And it's the sort of thing that could tend to follow you around.

I’m shocked by some of the emails I’ve received over my career. Just a few weeks ago i was cc’d on an email where my colleague was calling another employee the n word with a hard r. It was hard r Friday though so i guess it’s okay. I was still taken back by it however
I mean whether they should or should not is irrelevant.
It’s a company phone / IM software etc., so it’s the company’s right to do so legally and probably half ethically because the flips side is if someone was messaging g about doing something illegal or detrimental to the company.
Honestly, amazes me when people get annoyed for being busted when they communicate cr-p on their work phones.
Just like locking your doors at night. Yes, we shouldn’t have to lock our front door every night because people shouldn’t come in a steal our stuff but they do so we lock it.

The fact that supervisors are reading their direct reports texts and IM’s is just another reason why this company’s culture is so toxic. I’m surprised as a supervisor you even have time to do this.
I have some coworkers who text complaining about coworkers and the boss. Totally setting themselves up. Worse than what they are saying and writing is just that they actually see the world that way and think what they write about their coworkers. Pretty sad really that they are so arrogant.
