Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Hiring freeze in place of layoffs

I've just read that there's a hiring freeze in effect when we're desperate for more people. Our team was decimated in the last six months through both cuts and attrition and we've gotten nobody so far to help and handle the work they were doing, meaning we're doing it ourselves. More and more of us are getting burnt out and if we don't get more help soon, more will leave. This works perfectly for the company. They get a reduced headcount with no layoffs or severance in the picture. They win and we lose once again.

Same here in "out of region" where it's slow, but T is still hiring another technician to sit around with little to do!

I’m an OOR tech and if by some miracle an offer does happen to come my way I would probably have to take the cash rather then the ECO if the segment rates continue to crater / rise

Technicians are intouchable and indispensible at this time!
We're a much needed commodity and T is still hiring!

No one at T is untouchable. Everyone is dispensable.

Over the years, I have seen friends and and coworkers laid off at EVERY level.

Some of them were shocked.

No one should be shocked at this point.

Make sure you have an adequate emergency fund and keep your debt low/live below, or at least within, your means.

Best wishes to all.

They will close the job req's so the people they lay off will have to leave as there will be no internal jobs to move to.

You all should have stayed craft. I got 25 years with the company and will be here for the next 25 milking every last cent of the company. Bleed em dry. They can’t get rid of me no matter how hard they try.

Hahahahahahah!!!! There ain’t nobody in this company that is untouchable! Don’t get overly confident peaches.

Too funny...I got a good laugh at your response to this ending it with, "peaches!"

Not sure how long OP has worked for T but hiring freezes are ALWAYS a precursor for some organizational layoffs. It's a legal/liability thing as well as a way for leadership to control and tag favored employees that are in the soon to be impacted business units into available roles. The rhythm use to be... hiring freeze, then announce the re-org in October, give impacted employees 60-90 days to find a new position or be off the books by Jan 01 of the coming year. Now they want people off the books as soon as possible or at the latest before the start of the new fiscal year so they can predict budget and show operation numbers to wall street.

I am very, very confident that there will not be technician layoffs in out of region areas of the country. It's slow, but T still sees it fit to hire more technicians for what's about to come. So, there are safe havens in this company and I happen to be in one and confident that we are "Untouchable!" We're not even considered when it comes to layoffs, T management looks past us and thinks, "We are the future" of this company!

Hiring freezes happen every year, layoffs happen every year. These two things are like ground hog day at T . The only difference these days is the frequency. If you think you’re in a group that is “ untouchable “ because your work is the “ future” ….you too will be caught with your head in the sand when headcount reductions come your way. Don’t be ignorant to what is happening in the company. Look at the stock price. Look at the margins. Look at the other companies in the technology segment and ask yourself if this is a well run one. Prepare for the inevitable……

Hiring freezes drives bad behaviors, managers hang on to head counts no matter what and won’t release people for internal moves. Pure idiocy and lazy a-s management, nothing new to see here.

They are more likely to lose people who might have become lifers. Those at least might have stayed to get benefits but have no incentive.
Any good tech can get a job anywhere else.

They can't cut Union benefits. But I can make $2500+ a week easy even with no work.
Cut cables, fiber, alarms, call outs. All late in the day. I'm well rested as naps are the norm.
Cut whatever, I'll make it up by Wednesday.

where would lifers go? How about retirement or just about any other company? Taking away retirement benefits has given "lifers" no incentive to really stay for any predictable amount of time. Even Legg in his great wisdom said that even a bad programmer can get a job anywhere these days with many jobs and fewer workers wanting to put up with cr-p.

Lately, T has been retirement in place for some technicians. Why would they leave if there is very little work while getting paid for it! It's become the perfect job in T! Some people say that management is well aware of it and not even concerned one bit not to mention there will be more techs hired. Can't even imagine why? Who cares about the loss of benefits!

“Be patient, they'll cut more benefits and you'll lose even more people.”

Not really. T has a lot of lifers. Where would many go?

My team is part of the future. We still cannot get headcount. Upper Mgmt is clueless. That can be confirmed by the stock price and failed acquisitions.
So to think they can manage headcount is just another fallacy.

You could save at least an hour a day by dedicating time currently spent on these boards to a little extra work. Problem solved.

My team got more people. The team I left last year got more people. Your management structure made the decision not to replace. Does your team work in a technology the company plans to sunset?
