My home office has a better chair, better desk, more cozy floor coverings, much better monitors, and fewer distracting noises/people in the background. The office also has head-ache inducing lighting and one size fits none temp settings. Internet speeds are high at either location, I never notice a performance difference. One may be quicker than the other but the experience is the same on the network speed side of things.

"I genuinely believe many people who prefer working in an office versus at home have unfulfilling social lives or bad home lives… "

I'm among those who don't have a bad home life but do need time away from their stay-at-home or WFH significant others. Bully for those who can tolerate being around their SOs 24/7, though.

@liq, hmmm, dining room table or stuffy cubical an hour away from home? And the only people without highspeed internet are in India. Not that it takes more than a cellular hotspot to connect to a virtual desktop...

Not to mention that CPG has been doing everything in their power to reduce office space, take away offices, increase parking costs etc. in a clear effort to say "we don't want you here" for years. The original intent was to reduce costs, because buying/leasing space, utilities, janitorial, maintenance etc. costs a fortune and CPG leaders want to be able to justify their existence by cutting said costs. Many many buildings closed, and many lost their jobs. Then COVID comes along and makes a lot of the admin the space we have left seem like a waste of money as well. Suddenly CPG realizes they are on the chopping block next and suddenly getting people in office is very very important to them, so they pivot to hubs as a scheme to reduce bldg costs and headcount. Of course, they drastically over compensate and want to claw back previously perma WFH people as well. Throw in some local pols telling businesses to "do it for the economy" (and some political favors) and here we are. Notice how none of the motivating factors have anything to do with productivity and banking, which is a seriously problematic trend across this company. We need to focus like a laser on banking, not unrelated BS that litters the teamworks homepage these days.

Unfortunately, my guess is, they won't. They will ki-l a golden goose that makes billions per quarter and do so in the name of cr-p that has nothing to do with banking, because 'reasons'.

Some prefer to work in the office as it has better equipment, or network speed. Or maybe their home office is the dining room table, or a closet. Not everyone has a large home with a dedicated office, dual large screen monitors, and high speed internet.

I genuinely believe many people who prefer working in an office versus at home have unfulfilling social lives or bad home lives…

The social dynamics, competition, in physical offices fills the void in their lives. Also seems like most of the people clamoring for a return to the office are also climbers & middle managers.

For some work a physical presence is required not just preferable, but for most of a software engineer's day to day there really is no unquestionable upside.
I'll quit before I go back full time.

I've never been happier or more fulfilled with my work/life balance, and I've never been more productive with my time. I'll even take a different remote position at a 20% pay cut and a reduction in equity, at least, to retain WFH.

Most I'm willing to give is a day a week in office, and maybe temporarily longer in rare circumstances where the benefit in performance is clear.

He left a bit after 4 years, which means the real reason is that his stock cliff hit.

Good for him.
These companies touting their solutions for creating a more connected world can't have it both ways. Apple was able to ship the M1 and roll out new iterations of many other offerings since the pandemic hit. They're just fine.
Apple didn't collapse since the pandemic hit, and the flexibility offered by remote work is far more valuable to lots of people than the loss of in-person collaboration opportunities. We deserve to have input into how we work best and if that means walking away from companies run by egomaniacs that need to see butts in seats, then so be it.
