WHY are we going back into the office to a sterile environment? What is the advantage of the 'drop in' cubes? I had numerous boxes from my last office that I have to go through and three are just personal items that were in my cube. I guaranttee all of you, if you think back to your office days - pre covid mandate - at least 90% of people had personal items on their desks or around their cubes. WHY are we expected to stay in the office 8-10 hours a day with nothing personal? It's not normal. I bet if we looked at any "assigned offices" or the C-level offices they still have personal items... Why are we being treated like this? It's a waste of money...they didn't need to buy lockers, more filing cabinets, special desks along the walls for ALL the people when on any given day the floors or all the WF buildings (at least in my city - and we have three WF1, WF2 and WF3...) are only 10% filled! it's just crazy!!!

The last time I was in the office, a girl a couple of rows over from me kept talking very loudly on the phone to Tech Connect (I guess) about how she can't log in when she comes into the office, but she can from home. She wouldn't shut up. I had to move to another side of the floor not to hear her.
Just go home where you can log in! My gosh! And shut up!
I can live without personal items. What annoys the heck out of me all the stuff I have to bring with me. And then when I show up, chairs aren’t set right, monitors are set right, things don’t work the same etc. so I end up spending 20 minutes just getting setup. And of course the keyboards and mice are the cheapest junk they could buy. I could bring my own but that’s one more thing.
I suck it up and just deal with it but it is a PITA.

In a way, I like how sterile it is. No one knows anyone, which means no one notices when you're not around. I intentionally use different desks on different days to maximize the effect. Since RTO started, no one even knows my name or what group I'm with and that's exactly how I like it. Eventually the execs, or the next batch of execs will end the RTO crusade and then I'll just go back to working from home like I have for years before COVID.

Everyone that I hang with took their personal stuff home 4 or more years ago. Nobody wanted anything personal in the office because nobody wanted to beg for their belongings back

First off...STOP it. Don't be rude! If you can't have a nice reply, just pass it by then! It's a waste of time, most people are complaining and were much better preformers working from home when it was mandated almost 2 years ago. That along with the "cutting green house emissions" post I just read...well this company doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
This is not the time to be concerned about decorating your temporary work space with a bunch of tacky personal items. (Obviously WF doesn’t want employees to settle in anywhere.) There are many more serious concerns to focus on.
I agree it is sterile, I get in early enough to have the same cube and the same people generally sit near me, but I don't work with them directly. I would I have a picture or two i put out, but not everyday. There are a few people near me that have assigned cubes so there is some familiar aspects of where I sit. :) Getting to know the LAN people has it's benefits.
RTO is an attrition scheme. Charlie still needs to decrease head count. It's working.

You are a cog in a machine, nothing more. You are to be dispensable and replaceable as necessary.
I am assigned to neighborhood seating, so I have a different desk every day.
They gave me a service anniversary cube to display on my desk that I no longer have.
Now that’s a waste. Desk ornaments are meaningless in an environment where no one has a desk anymore.
Since I got a neighborhood desk, my engagement has hit rock bottom. I don’t feel appreciated, or even known anymore. I feel disconnected from my teammates, who are scattered around the floor. We used to sit together. Now we barely talk at all, we are separated, and not in the same desk each day.
Going to office is just depressing. Such an anonymous feeling. I miss all the personal touches, mine, and those ornaments of those who work with me. They were fun, and conversation starters. They were part of “us”, our team, our humanity.
Breaking up our teams this way reduced collaboration, and it seems intentional. What other effect did they expect by taking away our desks?
No one wants to pack and unpack stuff every day, so all the personal touches are gone. Yes it is sterile, lifeless, gloomy. I feel a sense of loss.
This is another level of complaining. So you don't work well if you can't see your plush pony or your kid's cr---y artwork?
When I was a manager, we would be asked about engagement if our team members didn’t have personal items on their desk..
My have times have changed.
i keep my personal items I. my backpack and when I get to my cube for the day I pull it all out then put it all away at the end of the day.
