Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The leadership structure creates the employees that do the bare minimum.

Not that I defend the truly lazy and irresponsible employees, but with all the unnecessary and complicated procedures, and management that only knows how to make work more complicated and slower for us, I can safely say that the company has created employees that do the bare minimum even though they truly want to work and make a difference.
Looking back 5 years ago when I joined the company, I wanted to go the extra mile, do more work, make a difference. When I realized that all of that doesn't make a difference and that I always hit a wall of management decisions that pulled me back and made my work harder for me to do, I just went into the mode of doing exactly as much as was expected of me. No more no less. With that way of working I survived at the company. All and all. The management molded my work behavior to be like this. Think about how many employees that don’t go the extra mile have they created company wide.

There is a reason why the do-nothing people stay don't leave and go to another company, they are do-nothing people and they just know how to complain and blame others. Nobody else gonna hire them.

Santone did the same at her previous cable tv position. This is way Stankey hired her. He wanted to adjust salary bands at T to mirror what was done at cable company, she succeeded.

Everyone has figured out what was posted by the op, you can’t blame the workers for having such a view when all these years latter after the acquisitions, management shuffles, creating useless processes that are just goal posts that get moved the stock price is in the dump, we don’t have anything new to look forward to (running fiber this late in the game is not an innovation Stank) and to make it all worst we have the same management at the top that created the mess in the first place. Get your paychecks and look forward to the weekends that’s my mentality.

I was an outside tech for over 3 decades.
when the yearly evaluations came before 2000, they were honest.
After that, no matter how good you were, how low your repeats were, how many jobs you averaged and no matter how good your customer feedback was, you never got above "meets expectations" because nothing was good enough.
So, for the next 20 years, I just tried to meet expectations. Life became far less stressful. I made far more $$$ because the extra jobs I didn't get done in 8 hrs, I got to do on OT.
The secret is to look great for one month, average for one month, then pretty much relax the 3rd month. Rinse and repeat.
You'll do little work, make lots of $$$$, and meet expectations.

It’s all subjective. This creates the culture that rewards those that are tight with the boss, not those who perform at a high level.

Rewards structure also drives this behavior. I'm in Legg organization and have a job that no matter how well I perform will not get a bonus. They have targeted the types of jobs that are even eligible. And the yearly performance reward is so high up that anything good I might be able to do won't remotely undo bad decisions made at the top.

As far as the worker bands are concerned, if you believe that salary indicated somewhat their performance or value, the salary structure contributes to this. As you move up, you get less of an increase for the same performance. And has only gotten worse with revised smaller salary bands for the same job. Low performers got an increase for doing nothing and high performances got a salary cut.

Makes you care less given everyone essentially ends up with the same salary.
