Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Help me figure this out

So, a highly productive employee of ten years who did several jobs at once (they've had to hire two people so far to replace him and they're still not doing everything he did on his own) was laid off a few months ago. Meanwhile, last week, one of the laziest people in our group got a promotion. I'm trying hard to figure out the logic behind these moves but I'm failing at it. Help me out?

I bet the guy that got promoted is the same one who comes here regularly to hype the 'great' job Stink is doing.

You all seem to understand the game here. Act accordingly.

I’ve worked for many companies in my career, T simply doesn’t promote or even respect competency.

Went to a meet & greet today with a new vp for my group. People who asked in-depth questions are passed off with little acknowledgment and the usual “you all are a lot more smarter than me.” One guy popped up and made the most nauseating “authentic” comment is granted the opportunity the give an elevator speech about himself to the whole group. These are the experts at patting each other’s back and climb executive ranks.

Getting them promoted is never the ONLY way… it’s just the easy way to pass the trash to someone else

SOMETIMES, the only way to get a non-productive or low productive person out of your group is to promote them...........

Talk to your wife or your best friend, she/he knows best what's wrong with you.

I had a coworker always overhyped his work. Did a little, talked a lot. Always trying to talk his way into someone that did a lot. Full of himself.

They pay the position not the person! The person that gives a 110% makes the same as the person that gives 80%!

It’s always been a who you know company. If effort were rewarded
then most leaders wouldn’t be in their current role.
There’s no real concrete outline for performance. It’s all subjective so if the boss likes you the performance evaluation will reflect that. If you are a high performer who doesn’t kiss backsides then your evaluation will reflect that you do a good but not great job.

Someone who is very competent and effective in their role(s) can be perceived as a threat by a weak and incompetent manager.

For details, do a search for "the succession problem".

If you can’t hack it go to management. Don’t expect to stay. They get rid of losers. So sorry. I’ll

Personalty, not hard work gets one promoted at T. Additionally, anyone in craft with a scintilla of work ethic would not be on the bottom of the metrics but safely in the middle, and would never solicit a position as a low level manager. Now, those on the bottom and at risk, will grab any lifeline offered (management). T knows this and needs disposable bodies. They last about two years max.

Sounds like your coworker is on the ECRC path!

At T it's alway been who you know, period! Nobody cares how sloppy or poor your work ethic is. It's all about WHO YOU KNOW! I have seen these instances time and time again. If you don't have the clout, then don't ki-l yourself trying to get promoted...a complete waste of time and energy!

Typical at ATT, like the former unsafe craft tech, that was known for no hard hat, gas detector, FVD that went into manholes is the Safety Manager. The laziest guy that never did any real work and was a low number person, is now the new MSOC coach! Why ask Why.
