Work All The Time?

Am I the only one that feels like to be successful here I have to work all the time? Day and night. Feels like that is the thing we can't say out loud. It's mentally exhausting.

I work 35-40 hours/week and have done so for a decade. Yes, it’s possible. Maybe not in all parts of the company, but I’ve had a relatively stress free career. But I’m also not on the exec track. I made my peace with it and enjoy time with family and children. Life is more than work.

Post ID: @1qlw+1gGsSg2A Whoever you are it is totally inappropriate to make allegations you made above even if you don’t name that person. You are morally bankrupt and a nasty person. Why can’t people treat this like a forum to enlighten and hep others, not trash talk because it’s anonymous?

@1aeh+1gGsSg2A So happy for you! We at the O&A Chemical plant in Beaumont have also missed out on important events in our family's life. Times like that or not important to Management here because it does not affect them. They have pulled so many people for pettily project that your schedule days off are used up covering overtime. we to have had so many people come and go because our work and family life is out of balance here. But on a happy note, if your child or love one's birthday is in the month of April, and you have Vacation time in September, you can Celebrate it then. People are so happy here because THEY and THEM care so much about us.

F&$k that, I was on a high visibility/ high value team that would regularly work late into the night. We wouldn’t do it to brown-nose but we were just way understaffed. At some point during the pandemic I realized how ridiculous it was to be doing that. I’d be missing all these major events in my wife/children’s lives for what? Below inflation raises? I bounced out of there a few months back. Work where you are valued for your work and not how long you work. Before anyone tries to hit me with “but the pay at Exxon is so much better”, please spare me. My salary increased 50% and I don’t work half as long as a used to. OP, I hope you’re looking elsewhere.

When they say life work balance it reminds me of when they say cost savings.

There was a time I worked all hours, but I stopped that when I got THE WORST manager I hope I ever have. I was non-exempt and was expected to never get overtime. Yet, he wanted me to be in the office when he arrived (6 am) & not leave until he left (between 6&7 pm). When I told him it was impossible to do that and not work more than 8 hours a day, he said, “Make it work.”

For a while, I just worked overtime and never claimed it. After about 7 months, I had my first PDS review with him. Amongst other ridiculous comments, that s$&#h@&d had the audacity to ding me for not working enough hours.

He is the poster child of all that is wrong with the company. He is clueless, arrogant, disloyal, and expects more than he is ever willing to give.

Oh, and when he was cheating on his wife, he expected his admin. to screen his calls and cover for him. She refused. Later, when he brought it up again in her PDS review, she chewed him out. He actually dinged her for refusing to do that (as well as other inappropriate things - like pick up his dry cleaning). He screwed her over in ranking & drove her to quit much earlier than she would have liked.

Meanwhile, he’s still there “managing” people.

Yes to work-life boundaries. Do the work you do really, really well. It will give you the authority to say no to the low-value work that is keeping you late. 20% of most people’s work doesn’t actually need doing.

If you hire on at the O&A chemical plant in Beaumont, you are going to be working all the time no matter if you want to be successful or just make a living for your family. Management here doesn't care about your work/life balance. This site is short staffed and way too many people on LITTLE side projects. But on the bright side there is 1 manager for every 2 employees at this site. Management is available to answer any questions you may have just not on the weekend that time is set aside for their families. We work most of our schedule days off, but they do let your family drop your lunch off at the gate for some family time.

It’s absolutely a thing. I don’t work at home unless it’s really an extenuating circumstance. I could absolutely 20 hours a day for a month just to get caught up. Since I don’t, I just go ba||s to the wall during normal working hours. I used to pre-kids, but I just can’t anymore.

If you’re not setting work/life boundaries with your boss, then you are foolish.

Probably why I don’t work there anymore.
