Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Lead and Principals

How difficult is it to get promoted to lead from senior and from lead to principal engineer. Does Honeywell pay lead and principal engineers on par compared to other companies? I don't see too many principal or fellow positions open to apply.

Current progression for individual contributors in engineering is engineer 1, 2, advanced, senior advanced (all band 3) then lead, principal (band 4). Then on to fellow/chief but those are rare enough they are not worth mentioning. If you don‘t want to go into management you top out at principal.

I thought leads were lower than senior? at least at other orgs its not really that great of a role to be in.

Years ago, making the jump to lead (then principal) engineer was fairly difficult. Candidates would have 10+ years experience. Lately, the criteria and experience required have been diminished, I’ve seen people with less than 6 years getting the bump to band 4. Occasionally these promotions appear to be diversity driven, but not always. Honeywell will need to create more layers of promotional opportunity to keep people happy at this rate.

I think these jobs are less because it is a Band 04. This is also why it is hard for a Sr. Engineer (Band 03) to jump to Lead or Principle (Band 04). In addition to salary, Band 04 also get bonuses.

In Aero at least, there are set percentages for the number of higher level engineering positions, so regardless of your manager's opinion, you are competing against all of the candidates.

'cost constraints' AKA we don't want to pay you more because that means less money for executive salary and bonus.

In my area, pay is lower. Honeywell does not pay well but the job suits me for now - clock on/clock off.

You earn the title by doing the job. It will be in your HPD as a next step. You do not ‘just apply’. HR also limits the opportunities due to cost constraints.

Fellow is nomination only.
Lead is a chump job to avoid
Principal is a good job but rarely advertised.
Get principal with appropriate domain knowledge.

Not sure what it takes, but the pay is significantly higher compared to other large corps in our area.
