At Wells Fargo, a Quest to Increase Diversity Leads to Fake Job Interviews

https://news.yahoo.com/wells-fargo-quest-increase-diversity-184111525.html?guccounter=1

Joe Bruno, a former executive in the wealth management division of Wells Fargo, had long been troubled by the way his unit handled certain job interviews.

For many open positions, employees would interview a “diverse” candidate — the bank’s term for a woman or person of color — in keeping with the bank’s yearslong informal policy. But Bruno noticed that often, the so-called diverse candidate would be interviewed for a job that had already been promised to someone else.

He complained to his bosses. They dismissed his claims. In August, Bruno, 58, was fired. In an interview, he said Wells Fargo retaliated against him for telling his superiors that the “fake interviews” were “inappropriate, morally wrong, ethically wrong.”

You guys do realize that if a hiring manager has an open job, they SHOULD have an idea of who they want for it right? If they are completely clueless of who they could hire for a job before it’s open then that is really bad news.

I’ve seen a recent req for a role that should pay above 200k posted for two days and on the evening of the first day of posting, it went into Filled status with a fill day for the following Monday. Basically, the hiring manager already identified someone AND have closed the deal before the post. HR clearly knows about this, how is this acceptable?? Hiring under the table? The buddy system here never cease to amaze me. I have worked in other big financial firms before and yes, things like this exist but never to the extent it does here at Wells. The bias, the discrimination and the buddy system is blatant and in your face each and everyday. It’s great for the firm if the buddy system is led by bright and competent people but it’s not here, it’s led by management with giant egos that knows jack, the only thing they know is how to talk out of their a&- and kiss their way up. It’s like the blind leading the blind here. This is one of the biggest reason why this firm is the way it is and we will have a very difficult time lifting the consent orders. I have never seen so many incompetent people working in one place. I guess incompetent people needs to be surrounded by their own people that have the same view points and competency because they can’t have someone outshine them or call them out on their bulls-$/. Birds of a feather flock together, unfortunately this firm is led by subpar and discriminatory management that promotes illegal dealings of all kinds. Behavior like this stems from from high up, it fostered and accepted. This is a very toxic firm. I hope there is some class action lawsuit out there for others to participate because maybe then, this firm can finally purge out all this toxicity that is dragging it down to the bottom.

Your argument does not prove anything unless there is a breakdown of hiring per level per race. What you fail to recognize is that POC are often ”preferred” for lower level roles and pre-disqualified for higher paying ones. Show the data break down for roles above 100k and above 200k and the point will be clear.

Not sure how many hiring managers would be fully truthful, but it's worth asking, "do you already have someone performing this role as 'interim' title, and that's all they do? Yes?...never mind, you've already made your hire and this interview is disingenuous."

Group lead: "after a lengthy search, I'm so happy to report that we're adding..."

The group: ...the schmoe that's been in there holding down the fort until you could interview enough people to make it look legit. Please, we get it."

Anyone know what color and gender the WF diversity coordinator is. Safe to be it's not a white male.

@vuw+1gPByI3v - That’s not a sign they are fake. It’s a function of how many applicants they expect to apply. 5 days or 40 candidate, whichever comes first.

You used to be able to tell the fake reqs because they would have an expiration date just five days after the posting date.

I want to know about this internal placement process as I have always been forced to create a req and interview people as opposed to being able to just pluck someone. and of the non while people they hired last year I wonder what those jobs were. I'm guessing teller and cust serv rep

This is what happens when you can't promote people - you get sham processes.

While I understand it is not an inherently racist policy, it is quite ironic that the intersection of two separate mo--nic hiring policies results in the optics of a racist hiring practice. Way to go, WF HR!

HR and the execs certainly push racist policy. No question. If 5 qualified black people applied for a job, no one from HR is telling the hiring manager "you better add a white male to the interview mix, or else."

Widespread Wells Fargo problem. My manager told me recently to refrain from applying to a job internally because the hiring manager (a friend) already had someone in mind. I’m grateful I didn’t waste my time with that job and got another internally.

This is completely accurate - “A manager identifies an internal candidate he/she wants to hire. But that manager is still forced by HR to interview a minimum number of other candidates.”

Only since Chuckie’s racist comment, now that underlying “fake”‘candidate pool needs to be at least 50% diverse before the interviews can proceed.

Managers still have a way around that though too - they can just cherry pick their person and do an internal placement to put them in the spot they want without any interviews.

Total bull$h!t system. Thanks Chuckie!

Get real !!! Everything boils down to the bottom line. Of course, it has nothing to with race and not white men. They hired positions for overseas to save on labor costs. You can pay 4 analysts in Wells Fargo India and Philippines for the cost of 1 analyst in the US

"Of the nearly 26,000 people the bank hired in 2020, 77 percent were not white men, Ms. Burton said. And last year, 81 percent of the 30,000 people hired were not white men, she said."

so they hired only 23% of white men in 2020, and 19% of white men in 2021

Yet white men are 31% of the American population..

The facts above speak for themselves.

Yes. This happens all the time. But it has nothing to do with race, gender, whatever. A manager identifies an internal candidate he/she wants to hire. But that manager is still forced by HR to interview a minimum number of other candidates.
