It's also an "agile" thing. At the end of the day it's just another manager to report to, along with an entire set of the associated red tape.
I swear they could get rid of 50% of the people who work here, and if it was the RIGHT 50% this place would run a heck of a lot better.
now I have two people telling me my TPS reports are late
they think it "fools" upper management to believe they are following the rules on spans and layers and effective oversight. It's a scam perpetuated in all areas.
It sucks. Run.
I have SIX dotted line reports AND the summer intern will make it 7. I do everything a manager does except I do it in Word so that the person I report to with the manager title then copy and paste it into the system of record.
This includes performance improvement plans, 1:1s, day to day oversight of assignments, handling all escalations and issues, monitoring PTO, training completion and writing reviews. Oh, 3 of the 6 have the same title I do but no dotted line reports and I have my own non-manager workload on top of that.
One of the many reasons I’m looking outside.
Double the managers, 1x the pay
Dotted line was there before spans and layers. It's basically multiple same-level managers sharing power. I think it a term coined originally in the military
