Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Lots of layoff cycles

I haven’t been here long and I don't intend to stay around for long either, but I have heard from those who have been here much longer that they have gone through many, many layoff cycles. I am curious if there are any differences in the decision process of who will be on the target list in recent times and maybe 15 years ago?

I agree with the previous posters that age and salary are key factors. However, in my experience the higher order determining factor is the business unit you're in, specifically whether it is strategic or not, and whether the financials are solid with a projection of growth. I've seen (and at times been in) business units that were largely spared from major layoffs, and been in several others that were hammered. For the latter category, it is definitely the case that age (esp 50 and older) and salary are key determinants for who is laid off, surplused, RA'ed, PIP'ed ... or whaever term is coming next.

1993 blood bath was based mostly on performance. Of course some managers were moved and hidden until the smoke cleared and then promoted right back to management.
Since then the majority have been age biased.
Very few were whole areas simply sold to a vendor.

All true but they have to sprinkle in some youngblood to skew the avg Just 1 out of 4 can move it 8 years or more

Nope, it's pretty much the same as it's always been ... primarily age and salary. If you're older, and make more money/higher band level, then you for sure have a target on your back.
