Raising miminum wage

The minimum wage increase to $22 effective at the end of June is generally a good thing. However, is celebrating this a bit foolish because pretty soon it won’t be enough to live off regardless of the increase?

Oh my god, you are just plain WRONG.

That is a narrative pushed by corporations so that they keep wages suppressed but it is a complete lie!

Don’t believe me? Please just google “why was minimum wage created?”

It was passed in 1938 by four term president FDR:

“From the beginning, the minimum wage was meant to be a living wage—meaning families could live off of the pay comfortably, rather than struggling paycheck-to-paycheck.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a major proponent of the living wage, saying that “by living wages, I mean more than a bare subsistence level. I mean the wages of a decent living.” With this idea, a family that earned minimum wage could not only cover the costs of food and shelter but also save for emergencies and have the funds to thrive rather than just get by.”

I have no idea why people don’t give an eff about their fellow Americans anymore, but minimum wage should be a living wage, period. That was its intention and purpose, and the wealthy are trying to erase that from memory and by the looks of it it’s working!!!

A fellow poor person right here on this very site is peddling this crazy lie. What a shame, to see how far we have fallen as a nation.

The problem with minimum wage is that it was never meant to be able to support a family off of yet people are stuck in situations where they are trying to do exactly that. To really help people we need to focus on lowering the cost of goods/products/services which therein helps everyone without the limited short term benefit followed by an increased cost of living that raising the minimum wage causes.

$100k in high cost of living areas is nothing, and has nothing to do with money management skills when a median real estate prices in those areas are $1mm.

You seem like the type that is obsessed with wealthy people that don’t give a hoot about them. Maybe you’re even obsessed with a wealthy, orange faced, New Yorker who literally hates poor people and has been quoted to to that effect on numerous occasions.

Of course your pals getting paid $12 an hr would be thrilled with $22 an Hr, $12 is peanuts! And should be illegal! Are you OK with Moynihan getting a 30% raise while you probably got 1%? Are you cool with him making 500x the average median worker? Are you chill with the average CEO salary rising exponentially while the average workers salary has flatlined?

Wake up and stand up for your interests, not the interests of corporations.

Stockholm’s syndrome in full effect.

Negative people will complain about the tax hit on winning the lottery.

The true minimum wage is $0 because employment is not guaranteed. Slavery? Ge-z, Pull your head out.

I know plenty of folks earning $12 an hour so yeah they would be thrilled to make $22.

In the meantime we have people on this site whining they can't make ends meet on $100k annual.

Inflation sucks but if you can't make ends meet on 6 figures you're not good with money.

Um wrong. You’re on this site so presumably you’re not a billionaire or a CEO of a multi- billion dollar corporation, in fact I’d venture to say that you’re a working stiff just like the rest of us.

With that out of the way, why do you insist on parroting talking points that go against your best interest and only bolster the arguments of those trying to squeeze every last drop of value out of you?

Minimum wage was created to protect the working class from getting taken advantage of and to guarantee them a way to one day make it into middle class. Clearly, this has gone by the wayside with stagnant wages and insane COL increases but I digress.

You’re saying the true minimum wage is $0? That’s literally slavery.

My god, the level of backward and just ignorant thinking is so disturbing that it boggles the mind.

Please educate yourself before you speak such nonsense. Yuck

The true minimum wage is always zero.

There are plenty of people who would love to make $22 an hour.
