Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Wonder why they're being so generous??

Train 8,000 women in other countries to code. Sounds super selfless on the surface. However, totally self-serving because it's a guarantee WF will benefit more than it costs them because they will hire them all and still save money even after training them because 1. They're female so they will pay them less, and 2. They're in countries where their pay will cost WF a fraction of what you spend in the U.S. Love how these initiatives are viewed as WF being generous, yet it's entirely self-serving.

Dang. And we can only be reimbursed 5k a year for school we have to do on our own time? What a rip.

H1B visas exploded under Bush Jr. and has been big ever since. No one ever stopped it despite promises every election time. Big business who feed a lot of dark money to campaigns won’t allow it.

Just like the mob, follow the money.

Someone should call them out on linkedin. I've been tempted to do so, but I work for a WF supplier that would probably fire me.

They did something similar with some of our offshore manual testers last year since manual testing was being phased out. They got paid training for half a year and their years working as manual testers was translated to years working in software engineering total, so many of them ended up starting as "senior software engineers" when we changed titles instead of "associate engineers" as they should have been.

They were (or are, if they're still around) honestly pretty awful and had to be hand held incessantly for almost everything.

What good are coders in areas where they don't have phones and broadband at home and use their hand for TP?

Good job, OP, you figured out capitalism. Corporations aren't doing anything out of generosity; it always boils down to finding new ways to fu-k be worker.

Another case of Charlie flushing shareholder money down the drain.

I work daily with 2 of the ‘girls who code’ hires. In the past year they’ve both tried everything from UX to Java to AI/ML - the flit from one thing to the other, finish nothing, and are still trying to figure out what they want to do. They’re paid extremely well and provide no actual value beyond publicity. As a woman with a long and distinguished career in IT, they’re an embarrassment to those of us who get the job done well.

Do they really think they're going to get competent developers by teaching a little coding? Does management even understand anything about what it takes to create secure, maintainable, usable systems? Anyone can learn to code. Teach them design patterns, testing and ethical hack topics.

The turnover rate outside the US is much higher than in the US. Folks overseas are getting the training and bailing left and right.

They are so ridiculous and such hypocrites. That is fine to train them. But, will there be a language barrier? Yes, there will be a language barrier as well as other detriments. And because of that, much is lost in translation and nothing is first class like SVB says it should be.

I worked with an East Indian that was located in the US. He couldn't read English. No lie! Every time I would e-mail me, he would call me. And then there were problems with him understanding what I was saying over the phone. He was so annoying. Constantly telling me what to do even though it was the wrong thing to do, but you know - they are just so much smarter than us Americans (as they say over and over again). No one said anything about him and you know they all knew. And "they" means all of his culture.

Train the women here in the US - you lousy old white (and I can say that since I am white) men who are constantly trying to make it appear that you are so progressive. You aren't. You are a bunch of self-serving egotistical jerks who need to go crawl back under that rock.

Exactly. Offer it to everyone in the US. They are always complaining that there are not enough STEM graduates in the US, but then try to get a STEM education. How many US people have applied to universities and then get rejection letters because of universities being filled with foreign students?
