Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

It's disappointing to hear that there are people whose managers have rejected their training requests. (Someone complained about that in one of the posts). I must admit, something like that never happened to me, but it seems that Intel is not so much of a learning culture anymore? Recently, a young talented person asked me about that because she was thinking about applying here.

So the manager basically implied that smart people wouldn't want to work for Intel. That's the smartest thing that any post-Grove era Intel manager has ever said. Read Paul Buchheit's post on Intel. He left Intel to become the 23rd employee of Google in 2000. Smart people knew Intel was a sh*thole 20+ years ago. Buchheit went to create Gmail at Google.

Buchheit: "Working at Intel was a draining environment, and I knew I wanted to leave."
"In hindsight, I realize the early team at Google was actually quite remarkable. I think they made a real point of hiring smart people."

Most STEM PhDs are paid for by the university/grants. Would Intel just provide funding so that the university doesn’t have to worry about it? Does Intel give more money for PhDs than universities do?

I'm learning plenty. I get a number of required trainings forced upon me by HR.

Way back when Intel budgeted at least $1000 yearly for each person for training or something like a convention to enhance growth. It was very nice and helped a lot. When it was a GPTW.

In fairness, I’ve seen quite a few utterly ridiculous training requests, especially recently from RCG’s. No doubt, investing in your team is super important. But a new hire on a PCIe team won’t retain a thing from a week long DDR class, since they won’t use the info anytime soon.

intel has a learning culture: learn powerpoint, learn to brown nose, learn to accept your arranged marriage to a newly minted “engineer”, learn to flirt with the overfed hr overseers.

Like everything else, it is group and manager dependent. Until management forms some cohesiveness within the company, this will never change.
