Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why are contractors working overtime when we are laying off?

At Baytown we have contractors working in offices 7 days a week yet no one seems to know what they are working on except drinking coffee and going to the bathroom. Who brought these people in, what are they doing, and why do they need to work overtime? Anyone seeing this at other sites? We can’t pay raises to cover inflation and we want to get rid of Exxon employees yet we can waste money like this?

Because the CEO is a complete id--t. He has no clue what it takes to run the company.

Words of wisdom from Esso circa 1980's layoff.

"It would do better being a stockholder than an employee." Stockholders are treated much better than employees.

They're hiring contractors because they're significantly cheaper than employees. D'uh ! No medical/dental, no pension, no 401K matching, no social security and unemployment contributions. Did you really not understand this simple math ?

I came in as an EM contractor. But then I got hired as an employee (upstream engineer) in the year 2000, right after the Exxon Mobil merger. I retired from EM financially independent in 2016. I was never a big shot;. It was in good run. I never cared about ranking; it was BS. Good luck to all!

I’ve seen some of these people actually get hired, with pretty decent salaries tbh

I’m at an SBU and even here there are quite a few employee and contractor “full time” jobs that I found questionable. At the complex sites it’s just insane to me what they have people doing for work.

Contractors do not have Labor Burden Costs. Overtime is a great financial deal that avoids hiring more permanent people.
