Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Any recruiters here?

How are our recruiting efforts lately?

Are we still getting A players?

How about B players?

I hear candidates are asking for very high total comp - is that true? How about sign up bonuses, I hear that's a must nowadays.

Anyhow, fill us in.

In recruiting outside of EM. More jobs than warm bodies. Mob/demon, bonus structures, and better work life balance at competitors and non competitors. Previous and current EM people are actively searching.

I was asked to go to recruiting events shortly before I left the company. This was in late 2020. My main takeaways:

  1. We don't get any A players (since we're mostly recruiting fresh grads, I'd define this as a good school).
  2. Those who do show any interest are in it for visa sponsorship.

Every second question I was asked was, "do you sponsor?". And yes, we are far below pay compared to e.g. tech. Grads at Meta are collecting $250k+/year in total compensation with 0 years of work experience. If you think things are bad now, wait for a few years until those who we hire today run the show. XOM is dumpster diving when it comes to talent.

Alternatively we can wait for the economy to enter a recession and hire while everyone scrambles to find jobs. I think a recession is about to hit in Q3.

so true @1afx: "EM simply a company of low salaries today."

EM is drastically below industry. The competitive benchmarking salary was a literal insult and showed everyone how massively disgusting and disingenuous DW is after his widely reported audacity to tell staff that higher salaries were coming to slow attrition before it was later revealed that salary treatment would be well BELOW inflation. Now we are trying to rebuild the headcount and applicants are turning down our offers and indicating they want are 75% more than the HR maximum offer. EM simply a company of low salaries today. Unless you are a useless id--t who only knows how to ask pointed questions as a manager and higher. Then you are overpaid at any level bc you are unemployable elsewhere.

BK did say in the recent forum that EMIT can always hire from other countries; I believe the word he used to describe this situation was "fungible"

I guess we'll just hire Data Solution Architects from India then

@OP I get calls from Exxon recruiters fairly often. To say that they’re out of touch would be an understatement.

@Exxon recruiters: you will never fill the machinery engineer positions in Baytown and Beaumont at the experience level you require for what you’re offering. It just ain’t gonna happen. Also, if you want more qualified applicants, drop the age query in the form of a citizenship question from the applications. Everyone who has ever held a job knows that I-9 verification happens on the first full day of employment, so it’s obvious you’re screening for specific age ranges, which gives me a good reason not to work for you.

We’ve always been getting C players and below. This is Exxon, not BCG bud

I am in IT and we are having difficult time finding candidates and filling roles.

On the Data side things are rediculous with Solution Architects asking for $200K+ (base) and are asking about sign-up bonuses.

Things are nuts.

Not a recruiter, but we’re having issues pulling in folks into Baytown because news has spread to the university level, and Texas isn’t an attractive state for non-natives.

My friend applied to a Houston-based research role as a recent PhD ChemE grad. EM's offer was <$120k per year, no bonus. Turned it down for a non-O&G chemical company that was offering $5k more base with a $10k signing bonus, 9% 401k match, and year-end bonus structure. Tech firms aside, we're not offering competitive packages for traditional chemical engineering roles. Young people are not lured in by the pension.
