Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What else do you know?

Those who know more on flattening of organization JS mentioned in his email, do tell.
Is 40-50 org size for 3rd level managers rumor or fact?

I'm a second level IC, and I count the Stank as the 8th person in my chain of command. That's ridiculous. I never remember the order of overpaid #s 4-6, whose bonuses are more than my annual salary.

I go back to the old Southwestern Bell days when I started in IT. They were flat before the merger with Pac Bell(Stankey's old stomping grounds). When I joined, we had a function manager that had 25-30 employees(mgt), and the directors had probably 10-15 function managers. There were little to no contractors then, but the org size for a Director was easily 400. There was maybe one other level between them and the CIO(Glotzbach at the time). I personally think having 30+ employees(mgt) is a bit much and I had that many at one point. It makes 1-1s with any frequency near impossible. But, the idea of having Directors whose total org size is less than 10 and then reporting to an AVP whose org size is probably less than 50 is definitely indicative of an opportunity for consolidation. Too many AVPs/VPs built empires in many cases for an "invented" need and those people were put into positions by their buddies most of which are long gone.

It's a wild Roller coaster ride at the expense of you and your family. There are better run organizations out there with plenty of openings.

This is the new vision because we are
out of money and the stock price is so low. Expect cuts all in the name of progress.

They never set any metrics t measure success of a reorg. Instead they do one every year to say they are progressing

I mean as an AD in ATO I had 20 employees and 50ish contractors. Did more work than 90% of Directors but not compensated the same

T always views change as progress...unfortunately it never is here. Seems decisions are made with a throw at a dart board, very sad. When margins were reasonable they could occasionally miss on strategy , T can't afford it any longer. The outlook is poor, update your skills and prepare yourself for options.

We were told that our org has too many level 3's at this time, but lord only knows what that means. The worker Bee L2 IC's are overloaded with work and we took on 10 more to help. I hope that keeps us safe but I have no confidence that it actually does. I honestly don't know how they can do surveys, and Rah Rah sessions over and over to help boost the SH*& morale and then turn back around with layoffs. The whole thing makes no sense especially to the wall street folks, and our stock shows it.

It makes no difference because six months from now it will be a new better strategy and everything will change again. It’s a rollercoaster. If I had a jet for every time leadership said ‘back to basics, this is it, our future is bright, well positioned for future’, I’d be able to start my own airline!

There are IC third levels and manager third levels.

ICs generally don't have anyone reporting to them, although sometimes get tasked with managing vendors.

There are plenty of 3rd levels that have no reports and thousands that have fewer than three. I’ve seen some third levels that surf the internet all day either shopping, banking, investing or watching streaming videos. All levels above the third level needs to be realigned and eliminated.

Also duplicative functions in different units need to be eliminated!!! HR needs to be flattened and each business unit does not need a Finance CFO and controller.
