Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM doesn't even try to keep talent

People don’t leave here just because of higher pay elsewhere. They are leaving because of the overall atmosphere caused by the company's lack of prospects.
How many people here have been personally advised by managers here to leave IBM if they want better working conditions?

I had my last boss tell me that I "should drink the koolaid" with a straight face, because I was being pessimistic about things and vocal about my stance... my former boss (and boss' boss) routinely made comments suggesting IBM may not be the place to be if we didn't agree with things happening.

I quit sometime back and many others have also left since

Microsoft just announced they are raising salaries (not cutting costs) to retain talent to maintain their stellar company growth. Microsoft wouldn't exist except for an IBM mistake, and now is worth 16x old IBM.

I was fairly vocal - fair - but vocal - in my Checkpoint as it all reflected in my challenges.
I was at least not told to re-word anything
It was otherwise totally ignored - not any response much less gloss over - by manager and 2nd line.

I do know that many issues also beyond my 2nd line (anything that involves money - salaries, lab HW, proper product positioning, ....) but they could have at least acknowledged them.

The removal of rebuttal is also disconcerting to me. If feedback is one way then it's not feedback nor a discussion and is meaningless.

I just posted in another thread here - IBM itself considers it at 15-17% below market comps - which I also know are optimistic given colleagues and open jobs I've discussed with recruiters. This at least for Band 9

So how A can disregard that when saying he's not concerned about attrition? He knows he's way below market and doesn't care if the rollup number he believes is comparable?

Stuck until both kids are in daycare, wife working part time, and I can start interview prep. Happy to have a job and be paid above average market rate working remote in a LCOL area a few hours away from the office location. Manager been at IBM for 38 years and has software engineering background - a rare breed. Could be worse given the uncertainty in the macro environment.

left late last year, got a manager that decided to do weekly 1-1 only to talk about their day and week and kids etc - nothing work related. then told me i had to video a presentation I undertook with a customer or invite them to the meeting so they could see me present, as I've been doing tech sales for 6 years, i decided to look else where, I don't need micro management. Went to another software company and its actually professional and positive, Work is more intense, but they have a sales structure, and discuss sales strategy, never once did we do that in IBM. its harder work than IBM , but has potential - already my manger said in a year I should get a band increase and even more $$$.

I left last year. The straw that broke the camel's back was when HR removed the rebuttal section on the evaluations. You didn't have a way to defend yourself. I was out!

Disclaimer: i left in 2018

what you describe is an ibm cultural thing. at other companies where "ibm retread execs have moved" it's same attitude. some of the worst are the old SWG execs that were in Raleigh, essentially pompous a$$es convinced they were doing great work, but in reality we're years behind the competition...

OTOH... most companies are similar. if you don't like the culture, move on. ibm has no culture now.

my best advice has always been "marry into wealth....". lol..

In January 2022, during my Checkpoint review, my manager made me change my annual reflection which included details of very specific challenges and issues during the year. He also told me that I should just quit if I disagree with something IBM does. My last day is coming soon.
