So many people are complaining about RTO...why? Be thankful that you have a job or career and you are able to provide for your self and family. It could be worse. What do you expect these companies/ businesses to do with an empty building???? If it's that bad....quit!

OP, if you were around during the industrial revolution when little kids were toiling away in mills and losing their fingers, you’d be like “what’s the big deal, you’re lucky to have a job”
I get it, change is hard, but it’s part of life. People are allowed to want to improve their lives and strive for happiness. Unless you’re a billionaire benefiting from all these wage slaves then you shouldn’t go against your fellow workers. Bad look.
What did offices do during the pandemic? Oh yeah they were closed. As far as I'm concerned they can stay closed or maybe they could work with the local government and provide housing for people that cannot afford to pay $2000 a month for a one bedroom apartment.
If the IRS was giving out significant tax breaks to companies for WFH, you would have never heard of RTO. We work better together from anywhere, we're innovative and leveraging tech...BLAH BLAH BLAH. Location strategy would be wherever you're sitting.
I believe the government asked large employers to RTO to save other businesses like restaurants, fashion, gas, parking garages, etc. I bet them toll booths were hurting too. Where my EZ Pass people at? Most business districts are walking the Green Mile. Remember when grandpa Joe was talking about it's time to get back in the office. That wasn't him talking, that was his donors saying if you don't get people back in the office or give us more PPP $ we're not gonna have any money to donate to your re-election campaign. Google and Apple are the most innovative tech companies on the planet. Do they really need their employees back in the office? I would think they would want to create better virtual work tech, show it off and sell it to the world. I know they have large campuses but the cost of those campuses are nothing when you have people who make less than $20 an hour buying $1400 iPhones.
Politicians and companies are fighting climate change, rightfully so, but still having people travel to work everyday using fossil fuels and heating and cooling massive buildings. It's so insulting to anyone with half a brain. The guard will change and working virtually is the future. Just like how manufacturing jobs are not coming back, RTO is dying and not coming back for non-customer facing jobs.
The OP reminds me of my friend's dad who got mad at him from quitting a job a a local papermill to go back to college. His reasoning was that you don't quit a perfectly good job. My friend is now a chemist making well into six figures in a low cost area and the paper mill has been sold 4 times and pays about $12 per hour.
Why complain? Because Covid isn't over. Literally, the week following my hesitant RTO I came down with Covid and have been sick since.
AND YES, I was vaccinated and boosted. Talked my doctor into prescribing Paxlovid and started feeling better, and now I am developing a sinus infection.
So, 3 full PTO days burned, copay for husband who received antibody infusions, co-pays for telemedicine and virtual primary care visits, and we're not done yet.
I don't see how the workplace can be "safe" again, ever. This virus keeps mutating and offices are no cleaner than before, just slightly less crowded.
Well, for one thing, sticking up for yourself isn't necessarily complaining and it can drive policy changes. Charlie tried to do away with WFH at BNY years ago and took so much heat for it he had to admit defeat. Then he came to WFC to work from home himself.

they can sell to investment real estate firms for new developments and lower their monthly fixed expenses - duh! plus plays to a greener Wells Fargo....

@OP, be aware that it was YOUR post, out of the thousands on this site, that made me see the light. OF COURSE I should just be happy I have a job! Forget the stupidity of leadership, the incompetence of senior executives.. THEY GIVES ME MONEY EVERY OTHER WEEK, so JUST BE HAPPY!

OMFG you are correct - they hired me years ago as a remote worker and now for absolutely no reason they are asking me to drive in to an office to sit by myself and do Zoom and Skype meeting with strangers around me.
Oh and still be on early and late. So I can see people I will never work with - that makes sense
Simple. Sell or cancel the lease for the empty building. Profit.
