Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

RTO Observation

I go into the house everyday because I can’t really focus at home. Working from home to me is a day off. Nothing against those who do. I actually wish I could be more productive at home than I am in the office.

One thing I have noticed though is there’s literally no office interaction. Pre covid you’d see in person one on ones and coffee breaks. Nobody seems to want to talk to anyone. Also, my location seems to be the same people everyday and the floor is at 10% capacity which is being generous.

It’ll be interesting to see how things are going forward. The company might be in a position where they can’t do anything because too many people are refusing to comply. Pretty sweet

This is a reply to: "if business leaders can't see you then you don't exist. "

How about the Business Leaders join the 2020's...it's not the employees that need to change it's the management from the top down that need to reevaluate this RTO process. What could they say about the last 2 years...we were all out of leader's sight...but here we were working our little butts off...making the company money. It doesn't make sense!
LIFE WORK Balance not work life balance! Happy employees = confident, trustworthy, loyal employees. Micro managed employees = ... well you're seeing it on these RTO posts!

Not to mention the epic fail on the BCP front that colocation involves. Some people are behaving like we didn't just come out of a pandemic. Hello! Do you want entire teams to go down because they are all crammed together in one hub, or do you actually want some semblance of resiliency?

As we all know, it's just about driving voluntary attrition and marching orders from politicians. That's why RTO "has to happen".

@1nri+1gylFMJU

They could do that for some roles, but unless HR can force customers into hubs...not all. So yes, for many of us RTO remains pointless.

for those complaining about not having anyone from your team in your location be thankful they don't make you move to a location where you do have the members.

I think the point is you're supposed to be connecting with the teams that you support ie: the business, you know ... the ones that pay your wages. I doubt they care if you connect with your buddies to BS about the latest baseball game or whatever.

In my experience, if the business leaders can't see you then you, for the most part, don't exist and when year end comes and you manager is asking them for money to cover their budget, they get pushback and then you get a new problem - layoffs.

On our internal Tech website RTO:
This group is expected to be in the office a minimum of three days per week to DRIVE FASTER DECISIONS; CONNECT WITH TEAMS, AND BUID COMMUNITY.

  • DRIVE FASTER DECISIONS = How? There is NO ONE from my team in this building - so I'm calling into conf calls like I do at home and things are getting done just as FAST!
  • CONNECT WITH TEAMS = This is a joke. There is NO ONE from my team or any team I support in this building.
  • BUID COMMUNITY = I don't want to build community with folks I don't even work with. I have a job to do...and that's what I want to do. "Community"? seems to be a waste of productive time if you ask me.

HOW is this a good business decision when it seems that a good majority are disgruntled over the 1980's decision??

How many teammates seem to believe that their house is in the office? Seems to be quite a bit of confusion. Typical for Wells.

@1gya+1gylFMJU, this is the right perspective. As an reader, I find the stories about how much everyone hates or relishes RTO, destroying the restrooms, etc. to be entertaining. As a shareholder however, none of it matters - unless they can quantitatively assess the impact of 'collaboration' or how-nice-it-is-to-see-everyone-again, save it for the monologues during the town halls. The pandemic offered a more than cursory glance that corporate behemoths need not truck employees into building and campuses for protecting or growing their bottom lines. To draw a parallel to the media and entertainment, it almost feels like giant service corporations were given a riskless opportunity - riskless in that everyone had to try it at the same time - to see what streaming services in action looked like and the future they promised. And the response of many of them?: "Meh, we're going to double down on rabbit ears and Blockbuster Stores model because [fixed costs, we miss you!, why not?]

How the F do you take supplies home? I was told there are no supplies and I had to purchase my own. Oh but there are some sad cookies I won't eat. Thanks UpChuck!

I personally believe having people “together” is what got WF into this mess.

If we look at the retail scandal, as an example, it happened across people who WERE in offices. It was across retail branches, where workers were together. If you hire into a misbehaving group of people all in the same location, there’s more peer pressure to conform.

Look at all these senior JPM folks that now run WF that want everyone in offices. They love being together, yet they can’t get anything successfully accomplished. Once again peer pressure to be a part of the CS cult (white male and JPM experience a must).

For the few years I was going into the office (when I first started with WF), so much WF money was spent on lunches, birthday celebrations, and baseball outings. Those were some very fun times (people loved being in the office and knew their coworkers, etc), but little work got done. So they just hired more people.

I’ve been working from home for 10+ years now and get way more done.

If I were a shareholder, I'd be mighty pi---d if the bank that's supposed to be getting more efficient is spinning its wheels over what seat employees are in if they're successfully accomplishing their job.

Did anyone else notice the Teamworks article the other day about ethics and not taking office supplies home? It’s ridiculous. Had RTO not occurred, there wouldn’t be a reason to post such an article. Furthermore, I paid out of pocket for supplies for 2 years and haven’t submitted an expense report. Nickel and diming much?? This place is such a joke. I’m forced to travel, pay to park and have the luxurious benefit of free sh***y coffee.

I've seen some reporting and nowhere has anyone indicated anything about days in the office, amount of time in the office, or even logging in outside of office. just that it's a combination of badge swipes and network logins. the only way I can see an at home VPN login negating a at office badge swipe/login would be of you weren't logged in at the office very long and we're logging in a home for most of the day, anything other than that would reduce productivity even more than rto already is

RTO is a freaking joke, and everyone knows it. My floor has so many people out because they are sick now. I’m not going in this week because I am sick and don’t want the evil-eyes from the 8 people on the floor as I hack up a lung.

We don’t even know these people we see in the office. No introductions, no lists of people assigned to our area, no name tags on desks, etc. How are we supposed to collaborate?

Guidelines have come out for managing individuals not meeting RTO expectations. It’s first a documented coaching and then termination for insubordination.

I'm with you OP. I had never worked from home on a regular basis pre-covid, so it always felt like I was working on a Saturday or doing homework. Too many distractions at home. And while it'd be nice to have more people in the office to interact with, I don't blame anyone for staying at home if that works best for them.

@uyz+1gylFMJU I was wondering the same thing… my guess is it is not legit as I have logged in from home many of the same days I’ve been in the office and haven’t received a warning. I’ve heard they have access to both badge swipes and IT data.

Most likely someone either mis-interpreted or mis-formatted the report for those individuals.

REPLYING to the post about logging in from office and home and only home counts in LOGGING report. That's insane. So what happens to the folks that work at the office and then go home and still work...it will negate their entire day in the office? IF that's true - they have some serious issues with their TRACKING SOFTWARE!!! But then again...tracking software is rediculous in the first place!!! IMHO!

When they start badge reports - are they going to do IP address logs also? They said we have to go into the office 3 days a week. NO MENTION of how long we had to stay and work in the office as opposed to some and then going home to finish the day.
Personally...I find it stupid silly for them to enforce this just because someone sold them a bill of goods on the revamping of the office spaces. We were very productive at home. For those that want to go INTO the office - great...GO. If your entire team is in the same location/building...great...GO. If not, like the majority of us - with our teams spread around the country and even the world...it makes no sense. The same conf call meetings can be handled at home as in the office. And for those that do NOT want to go INTO the office - they are more productive at home. Stop MICRO MANAGING your talent...cuz you'll be left with talentLESS folks!!!

We were 'sternly' talked to about it in our team meeting today. THREE DAYS a week. They're going to start badge checking. WHY? My "Neighborhood" is set up for roughly 50 cubes and a few designated offices. On any given day when I'm in the office there are ~10 people. No one talks OR the flipside...that's all they do is talk. There is NO ONE from my team in my building. We are still conducting TEAMS meetings/calls. There isn't any "in person collaboration"...it's a mess. And honestly troublesome that they'd do badge checks when we are getting our work done still at home. The bank has thrived with all of mandated to stay home during this 'stuff' - now since we did what we were told we're being punished?!!!

Hearing that if you log on from home on the same day that you go/badge into an office, it’s not counting towards an in-office day. Whatever data they’re pulling shows you only worked from home. Does anyone know if that’s legit?

RTO is a joke. Management should be shot. We survived and thrived for over 2 years working from home. This is purely an attrition play. Problem is, it’s the good ones (who have options) that are leaving. Those left behind will have to pick up the pieces while Charlie and his jolly bunch of scumbags from JPM will be out the door with their golden parachutes.
