Who is actually useful? Why to blame only planners? Planners are yes men/women and their job is nothing but a glorified PowerPoint efficient secretary.

you could have less if VPs get out of their egoboosting habits of asking for way too much data and not tolerating "I don't know" as an answer.

A couple years ago, our friends at BCG benchmarked our strategy and planning function against our peers and found that our staffing across that function was on average 3x the level they considered to be best practice. E.g. we had 9 FTEs covering a business/segment where a competitor might have 3 FTEs.
