Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Bitter truth

The bitter truth is that most who stay here decide to to so because of their laziness, no matter how hard it is to admit. I admit it. I'm only here because I know I would have to work harder everywhere else. I would be better paid, I might have better benefits, but I would have to work harder. Whenever I asked someone how they were doing in the new company I was told that they have to work a lot more. I don't know anyone who is better compensated but does the same amount of work as here or less?

Me too, 5 weeks vacation, very light load of work, working from home, and a pretty nice salary. Why would I go anywhere else?

The Indian outsourcers continue to move up scale. They are doing this to boost margins, and to show growth. Remember every head they hire is the result of another company downsizing. Some of that low margin GBS business and IBM cloud business is most likely heading this way. NOTE even Kyndryl can’t win the bid. Kyndryl’s stock price is making it ripe for a takeover by one of these guys.

So "Go Arvind" and your comment about "attrition is comparable to competitors so I don't care"

Yes, IBM, Wipro, and other similar companies all have comparable attrition problems:

I work incredibly hard and don't get paid anywhere near comparable.
But I'm retiring in a couple years - 5 weeks vacation - established.
So I'm staying as much due to age discrimination as fire-hose new job - for just a couple of years.
That said - I'm no slouch and putting in good hard work.
Just - as all should do - in any situation - make the plan yours and execute it - you can put up with more if it's your plan and you're tracking it.

Interestingly though a key person just resigned and when I said "tis hard to stay" he said "most tell me they're about to retire".

Now they're all very hard workers - staying to retire - but otherwise not happy about comp.

Our project is in for a major reckoning in the next few years as most are band 9 and 1/2 or so closing in on retirement.

So "Go Arvind" and your comment about "attrition is comparable to competitors /so I don't care"

That’s nonsense. I work incredibly hard here. I’ve been promoted many times, am paid well (although I know I would be paid more for B10 type work outside of IBM), have great benefits with 8% 401k match, am aligned with a great executive, and really enjoy my work. Most of all, I work with and also manage the hardest working people I’ve ever known. There are always some lazy people who stay at jobs but for me I’ve changed jobs nearly 15 times and moved across 3 divisions and that has been a ton of work to advance and keep growing.

If no raises year after year then you have a right to be lazy.
Even if you improve your skill set a spouse will be promoted before you.
That's the bitter truth.
Now go work on your checkpoint bluebird

OP statement is on point, I know because I was one of them. Quit last year and joined a much smaller, agile company for way more money and it lifted me out my lazy rut routine job I had at IBM. That said, the best part about working for IBM is work/life/balance.

Yes, I agree et al. I retired via RA 6/30/22 and accepted a full time government position 7/22. Less $$ but my day has an early start time and hard stop which allows me more free time. Yes working much harder to make deadlines due to high volume of work. But, because of my age I have a job plus additional incomes.

Couldn’t be more true, all the downvotes are people who are in denial. Nobody’s judging someone for being lazy, just admit that your “reasons” are just “excuses.”

Or you can't even pass the low hiring bar of current hot market.

Ibm pay doesn't cut it in current market.
