Resigning with unused vacation

Does anyone know if when resigning, are you paid out your unused vacation hours in your last paycheck? HR was zero help in answering this question if you can believe it. Lol

I retired last year in May. Did all the steps required by HR and was assigned "Someone" to help me through the retirement process. I NEVER heard from this "someone" even after repeated attempts to contract him/her. Finally got through to HR and informed them and got the "she must be on vacation and she'll contact you when she gets back". Never did. Contacted HR again, was assured my unused vacation will be paid on my final paycheck. It wasn't. Had to repeatedly contact HR/payroll/whomever to get this paid. Can't tell you how many calls and emails I had to do to finally get my vacation paid. Never got any explanation as to why I wasn't paid outside of the "it must have slipped through". No, I was a loyal long term employee and did not deserve to be treated like this. Only had to wait for 2 and a half months.

I also quit Honeywell recently and I used NONE of my vacation pay but I used sick time they are saying the sick time was my earned vacation which is wrong right? they are denying to pay me 30 hours of EARNED UNUSED VACATION. anyone else had this issue and if so what do you do. The managers there are saying they cant help since i left.

Assuming that you accrue vacation, you'll get it when you leave. Providing that you are within the use it or lose it and rollover limit rules.
Accrued vacation is part of your compensation and if they withheld it, that would be illegal, the same as not paying you for hours worked.
On the other hand, fictitious vacation (AKA unlimited vacation) is not accrued. Take what you can before you give notice.

I retired Aug 2021, salaried non-exempt, my final paycheck included "Grandfathered vacation hours" credited to me due to the unlimited vacation transition. It also included 2 cryptic additions that were sizeable, thank you very much but not sure what for (maybe one/both was unused current vacation/holiday adjustment).

I still have a week of vacation held hostage from a benefit cut done in the 90s.

@saf: If you're an hourly worker and are allowed 80 hours/year vacation time you're likely on the earn as you go vacation plan. Each month you earn 1/12th of your 80 hours. That's about 6.7 hours/month vacation earned time. An example is if you left the company in May you would be entitled to 35 hours of vacation time. If you used more than this at that time and leave the company they will subtract the excess from your final check. Honeywell changed to this format many years ago.

I do not have unlimited vacation. I’m in HBT.. I am also not on salary and only have 80 hours of vacation. It is accrued. I wonder if this means I should have it paid out to me?

Yes use it all up and then resign, that is the way.

The unlimited vacation was a huge scam of major benefit to only the company as the other poster said. The same goes for the 401k match.

This is why the company has moved towards an "unlimited vacation" policy wherever possible. They pitch it as a system in which you can expect to take vacation whenever you want so long as your work is not negatively impacted, your team/department is not negatively impacted, and your manager approves it. The reality is that it is impossible to meet the criteria above because everyone is overworked and understaffed. This is a system designed to never actually let you take vacation...

Under the old system you earned / accrued "vacation days" as a work benefit. This meant that a person would get paid out those unused vacation days when they left the company. Now with the "unlimited vacation" system you don't actually "earn" vacation days anymore, so when you leave they don't owe you anything...

The "unlimited vacation" system is a gigantic scam...

Yeah just use it all up and then resign just to be safe.

@teo+1
Not when there is "Unlimited Vacation". You don't accrue time under that scheme for Honeywell to pay back when you leave.

I thought companies have to pay out earned unused vacation if you are a wage worker.

I was in Aero in Phoenix and they wouldn't pay for unused vacation hours when you leave the company. The way around it is to use up your vacation time, come back in from it and then resign. It worked for me.
