Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Happy D-day!

June 23rd it all explodes. Huge RA 10k+. Followed by smaller mop ups. No 90 day divorce period. 30 days and hit the bricks. If you were planning any vacation save it and get paid instead to add to the paltry 30 day severance. Good luck

Hmm if the 23rd layoffs are true then I m surprised at the huge “ I am hiring “ campaign launched in the EMEA …I was one of the guys to get RA Ed last year .. it so appalling to see the campaign where entire leadership in LinkedIn saying what an amazing company blah blah ..it is .. quite disappointing n disgusting

Listen, you can't be working at IBM and be worried about layoffs. At some point, you will get laid off. That is a given. You just need to relax, enjoy your paycheck, but always have a backup plan when the phone call from your manager comes in. That's it.

At the end of the day, it is the same at most companies these days, though probably some fare better than others.

Whether it happens on the 23rd or not. One thing is for sure. IBM will keep laying people off in territories where staff salaries are high and labor laws protecting employees are weak.

If this is true, it shows IBM moving away from the old primary metric. (As goes revenue so goes head count) 1st q revenues showed growth BUT a lot of it came from a one year infusion from Kyndryl and that will fade away quickly. If we back Kyndryl contributions out of 1st q results, Infrastructure and SW both come up short. There are some other head winds also facing IBM Currency, interest rates, and litigation come to mind. Perhaps the bean counters are finally trying to get ahead of the shrinking revenue mill stone. Getting back to the under performers, Infrastructure can’t be sustained in its current form. Z and enterprise serving functions are a cost of doing business under the new Hybrid model, BUT everything else in infrastructure is shrinking (4-7% per year shrink) as far as revenue is concerned. (best guess is the bean counters have acknowledged this and are trimming now for the shrink that will come). I expect IBM to partner off the lower margin pieces of infrastructure, as IBM doesn’t want to abandon these markets, but does what to lower its carrying and investment costs. SW broke even in first q if you back out Kyndryl, and IBM will have to trim the overlapping SW offerings from Legacy IBM vs the newly acquired SW. IBM cannot afford to have multiple solutions when you are competing against deep pocket hyperscalers. If your department revenues are not growing but are more likely stable or shrinking, you are most likely going to be impacted. This isn’t something you will partner off, but rather just exit as you have a newer/cooler/more widely accepted solution. It boils down to IBM is a high cost/high overhead company and they have to get ahead of non-strategic/ low profit margin offerings. In SW division, that equates to RA’s where IBM chooses not to play. Consulting division is booming right now Kyndryl doesn’t factor it, BUT talent costs and industry segmentation does. Talent is costing a LOT, and IBM will have to address the problem of industry segmentation by deciding which industries it wishes to serve. Consulting will manage their head count via utilization, BUT there may also be a selling off of what IBM deems to be non-strategic industries. IBM has experience in this as they have grown and shrunk consulting via portfolio management. AGAIN if this rumor is true (50/50 at best) I wish everyone good luck in the coming restructuring.

Keep trying. If you make the claim every week of month, eventually you’ll be right.

@nim, I heard about AK doing that from a friend in HR. It'll be interesting if any other execs follow suit. I wouldn't be surprised because they really care about IBM.

Boy oh boy guys I’m worried this might be the big one. Don’t forget about that $1.6 billion. It’s nice that AK decided to do 2022 pro bono but that doesn’t cover it all. Somebody’s got to pay the rest.

See, there's a reason this post doesn't show up until afternoon.....the bitter, retired ex-IBMers who constantly troll this site all have good tee-times on Monday mornings and have to get a round in before they have time for this BS.

18 holes of golf, then a quick prune & metamucil smoothy and they're ready to sit down and make up some sh*t.
