I plan to retire within the next year. When should I tell my manager?
If my manager knows that I'm going to retire, is there anything bad that he can do to me? Or is there any advantage to me telling him that I'm going to retire?
They are piling on a lot of new requirements (that do not have anything to do with my job) that will require me doing a lot of unpaid work "outside of work" - during evenings and weekends. If I don't do all this extracurricular work then I probably won't get a bonus next year (right before I retire). It's not certain that I'll get a bonus next year anyway.
If I do perform all this outside work, it's going to take a lot of time away from my family.
What says the wisdom of the group here? Should I tell my manager that I'm going to retire a year from now, and just not go through all the extra outside busy-work he's demanding? Or should I NOT tell him that I'm going to retire, and NOT do the busy-work and almost certainly NOT get a bonus? Or do I do all the busy-work anyway and MAYBE get a bonus? We're only talking about $8k, so it's not a huge bonus.
My manager and I have not been getting along well. In years past we both worked for the same former boss with whom I had a great relationship. That was instrumental in getting me a bonus last year when my current manager rated me as "needs improvement" but our 1 over manager (my current manager's boss and who was my former boss) bumped it up a notch (which my manager isn't too happy about) because I'm recognized as the area expert in my job. Our former boss has moved on, so now it's just "me and my manager", so I already kinda know what my rating is going to be next year.
