At least when we were worried about layoffs we knew that we wouldn't end up with nothing. Yes, you lose your job but you receive severance that can mean all the difference while you're trying to find something else. Now we have to worry about PIPs which end with firings that come with exactly nothing. I honestly never thought I'd ever say this, but I miss layoffs.

The terms with the actual layoffs really weren't too bad, and it's less of a reputational stigma than for someone who was PIPed. I know people who got laid off who were company men and it was a huge shot to their ego, but I don't think it would be as bad as someone who was actually a really good performer who got PIPed. You can come to terms with a layoff eventually, but being told you're hot garbage is another story.
