Chances of moving within the company

Before I started looking for work at other companies, I thought about trying to transition to a new role within a company. I failed. Maybe it’s just me or maybe it’s not so easy to move within the company. What is your experience?

I think a lot of these replies are cr-p. I've been here 11 years, 2 contracting and the rest a blue badge. I've moved about 6 times now without any issue. This shouldn't be an issue at all. There are some folks who may try and block a move, but have that conversation open and honest with your manager. Any manager worth a damn won't hold you back from a move.

The truth is it depends. In the newer departments you can usually move under the same LL2. This may even be encouraged. The likelihood is a lot higher if you make it sort of a trade where you suggest someone to back fill your spot. I don't quite recommend it unless there is only one or so aspects of your current job you don't like. On the other hand it might not be advisable to trade for a different position at all and that is if your problem is with the company itself.

Very low. I was blocked by an LL5 at Ford Credit from taking a move to another department for a promotion. Thankfully I got HR involved and they got me out of there a year later. At Ford I was forbidden from applying for a promotional opportunity that I was well qualified because the position was hand picked. Lastly I was kept in the same position for 9 years and not allowed to move. “Too valuable to leave but not enough to promote” bs. Resolves when I retired.

No LL6 worth their salt would block a GSR from moving. That is terrible for a leader to do.

If you're a blue badge and a good productive employee your LL6 may block you. I heard that after three blocks he has to explain to HR why. If you're a bad unproductive employee... no problem. Your LL6 will pawn you off to an unsuspecting department.

I was fortunate and had good old school LL6's. I had good productive coworkers who could take up the slack until a replacement could be found.
One caveat, this was 10-20 years ago......

If you have a green badge, no transfers. You need to leave for 90 days before you can come back to a different job. I have heard rumors of exceptions.

You can move around within Ford quite easily. However there is a catch, you have be a contract employee and either quit or get cut. Returning back to a different position is not a problem.

Anyone with a pension isn't moving anywhere.

I may be wrong but I envision you as a younger employee. As bad as it may be now, just imagine what your chances would be like when you are in your 50’s. Sprinkle on white and male into the mix and whatever your chances were ti begin with just went out the window.

I always had trouble with that as well.
Not sure what it takes to trade horses throughout departments…. But with outsourced HR (less in-house team members advocating for employees) and rumors of reductions you won’t go anywhere for awhile.

Zero. Your supervisor and/or manager blocked you and didn’t tell you.
