Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I hate being lied to

I can deal with not getting a promotion. I can deal with seeing a lazy good-for-nothing friend of somebody high enough get that position., What I'm not okay with is having those above have me jump through hoops while holding that promotion in front of my face like a carrot and then slapping me in the face by pretending that it never happened. The first two things I mentioned would not get me to look for a new job. The third one has me willing to take a pay cut just to get away.

@OP If you can’t deal with being lied to then you need to walk away from corporate America altogether.

I’m personally glad that corporations lie to us. If they they actually told us the truth the entire system would collapse. We need the lies to keep it going.

Get out. Leaving EM was the best decision I made. No place is perfect. Every place has some form of politics and some form of competitive ranking. That's life. But, in this case, for the grass to be greener, the bar is SO LOW and NOT HARD to beat.

Probably don't have to take a paycut if you consider total compensation. At the higher CL levels in other companies 27-29 CL equivalent, there are more than decent bonuses and stock awards. Then there's the other benefits: much more collaborative environment, internal job postings with objective criteria, 9-80s, no VOYA, annual raises - not this 12-15 month variable nonsense.

Not everyone gets a promotion. Not everyone wins a prize. Winners, that learn to navigate the system, among the losers that don’t. Fact of life. Sorry.

I told them I would have to leave if things don’t change. It didn’t. And when I announced my departure they offered to change those things. It’s laughable how feeble minded management can be in this company. Like tactics from 1970.

I promoted myself and got a 30% raise by hoping to a competitor. If I stayed at greedy XOM, it would have taken me 5-8 years to get it.

The lies with a straight face by the supervisors are the worst. One of my piped co workers stated the reason they were leaving was because they were piped. The supervisor chimed in and stated the worker had chosen to retire voluntarily. The supervisors are programed to lie and try to cover up the nasty practices. It would be best if they would just stay quiet because we all know the truth. It is as if they think we are stupid and if they keep telling the lies we will start believing it. There is no reason for a worker to elect to leave before 59 years. It is just sickening they way things are and very demoralizing.

Go promote yourself.
Only you can do it.

Yes. Gaslighting has been a popular tactic for many years. They have just been more blatant about it the last few years. It’s insulting and I refuse to play along any longer. When they use the word “opportunity” I cringe because it almost always involves a job no one wants and will be devalued come review time. So, I end up working my bu-t off only to be told “it’s not a step out” “this work isn’t making a difference” “this doesn’t align with current priorities” or “you need to evaluate your work goals with your supervisor”.

Meanwhile, favored son is promoted despite not doing much work at all.

It’s all BS.

Supervisors only look out for their own hides. Bait and switch, manipulation, and gaslighting are common tactics. You will never be able to prove it. No one will listen. HR is useless.

Leave and be happier somewhere else.

EM does not care about your opinion.

You are in charge of your own career. Take your power back; find other work and, once you do, NEVER stop looking for the next job.

Alternatively, you can stay and wish upon a star. Good luck with that.

Peace to you.

Exxon is known to practice the "bait and switch" or "manipulative design" model for career advancement for years. The key is to see through the smoke and mirrors of the unethical practice (but not illegal).

Manipulative design is an approach to creating user interfaces that are designed to influence or trick users into taking particular actions that they might not take otherwise.

Imagine being taken for a ride by the supervisor for 2 years and then dumped into a ditch to fend for myself. Should have seen the sign and left ages ago
