Gr12 in SJC. When hired was given 2000 share ($50/share).
Year 1 anniversary: $27k refresh
year 2 anniversary:$47k refresh

Then I quit before year 3 because other tech companies pay better and their stock is worth more. Todays Cisco stock price was $43.80.

I also saved the company about 10M. They only cared enough to pay lip service. So I left.

"about 1/3rd of the total pre-sale value."

A third of something is better than nothing.

Do not feel bad if you do not get RSUs.

Run an after tax calculation of your net return.

It was the same with the original (pre-RSU, "regular" options, from early 2000s). With those, between taking out the offering price (you essentially returned it to Cisco), and the taxes; you essentially received about 1/3rd of the total pre-sale value.

The days of windfall profits in IT are over. The days of inflation are with us indefinitely. Welcome to the new world. Enjoy today and forget about trying to beat the system. It's broke for good.

Sign on bonuses and stock issued at hire are entirely different for sure. Gr10+ can try to negotiate that at hire. Don't expect anything since the hiring manager can make the call there as some prospects are a little more proud of their capabilities than they should be and get shot down there. Bottom line is the company could do a WHOLE LOT more with options and it costs them a heck of a lot less than raises. It drives commitment and employee retention. It also drives greed and ignorant decisions as shown by the ELT. Double edged on this one.

RSU targets are also based on location.

RSUs are mainly gr10 and up. All $ value with the final # of shares based on the price at issuance. There is a minimum amount based on grade. The manager only gets so many $ to allocate so if the minimum is say $45k for a 12 you have eaten a boat load of the budget. If you give 2 at the $45k and your budget is only $100k then you essentially lose the 10 or have to allocate it to the others so it doesn't go back into the pool. Some times this is the only lever managers have for compensation for the 11-12 types. Managers are told to take care of gr x and y so then again it screws the higher grades. The system has went from fair and equitable to just enriching the top echelon, giving just enough to keep newbies/low skilled workers on. This is all to drive out the remaining loyal high skilled workers to drive salaries and costs down. Rinse, repeat now every quarter. I would expect in a couple of years that's all most people not in sales will get instead of bonuses since it costs the company pretty much zip to shove that out.

RSUs are few and far between at my site.

Like @rpg+1h9OL0jG said, RSU's are restricted to higher grades. I had received 15K shares of stock options when I joined in '08, but they were $16/share under water when I was laid off in '11, so I was unable to exercise the 33% that were vested and they all expired.

When I returned to Cisco, stock options were no longer offered, but I understand that they now offer "signing bonuses" that are prorated if you quit in less than 12 months, but completely vested if you're LR'd in less than 12 months, meaning if they let you go you get to keep the full signing bonus and you have to pay back a prorated portion if you voluntarily quit.

Bearing in mind that the method of issuing RSUs changed in 2018 (?), you used to get a specific number of shares, now it's shares to the value of $x.

Over the last ten years, I've had around $350k worth, so an average of $35k per year.

The last few years it seems to me that they have been more targeted to higher grades (11,12), mainly because there's been limited cash for pay rises and that cash has tended to go to lower grades.

GE received $10,000,000 in stock last year + $1.7 million cash bonus. She must have really cut costs to deserve that bonus.

Depends on your grade level but not everyone gets them. Back in the day every single employee got stock options but that hasn't been the case for many years now.
