Under Lisa Su, AMD Is a Profit-Making Machine

So a former IBMer makes this list? Good for her, but how pathetic for IBM. Thought Big Bleu really expended effort in identifying and retaining top talent? [NOTE: AK didn't even sniff one of the 24 slots on Barron's "Top CEOs of 2022" list -- https://www.barrons.com/articles/top-ceos-2022-51657332638].

Under CEO Lisa Su, Advanced Micro Devices has become known for flawless product execution. While rival Intel has stumbled with repeated delays and underwhelming product launches, AMD has consistently released market-leading chips on schedule, spending a fraction of Intel’s budget on research and development.

Su, 52, has been laser-focused on ensuring that the company builds the capabilities to meet its promises, while managing the technology risks inherent in innovation. “When we commit to a customer, we must deliver,” she says. “We’ve been able to do that for the past couple of generations, and we need to continue to do it.”

AMD has also delivered financially. The company’s sales increased by nearly 70% in 2021, while Intel’s revenue was roughly flat. AMD also doubled its earnings per share, with free cash flow rising by four times last year. And in a world where many technology companies grew without regard for profitability, AMD’s operating profit margin surged to 25%, from 17% the prior year.

AMD’s run is likely to continue. Su tells Barron’s that the company’s next-generation server processor, Genoa, is on track to launch later this year. She is optimistic about its market positioning against Intel’s next offering. “The data center is the biggest bet for AMD,” she says. “Genoa is leadership from a performance standpoint.”

The same might be said of Su.

Not saying all are bad but a majority of IBM management is terrible, newly moved/promoted ones included... What do you expect from IBM lifer management who has never seen outside IBM and never experienced outside of what Ginni and Sam preached. It's already in their blood unfortunately. Why are IBM leadership
and HR not conducting 360 degree reviews when they are considering management promotions? They should seriously ask their subordinates and ex-subordinates what they think of their manager or ex-manager anonymously, because they'll likely tell you if this is the right candidate for promotions.

The overview of this article is Lisa Su sets a goal (technological vision) and holds her management to that goal (an aggressive sense of urgency). NOTE the financials driving this! AMD has revenue of 6 billion focused on one core technology varying wildly over the last 5 years depending on technological breakthroughs vs IBM having 60 billion focused over 8-10 core technologies shrinking steadily over the last 5 years. The shrinking is most likely the result of CEO’s who had a lack of technological vision (Ginni and Sam). AK seems to be addressing the technological vision aspect of being the CEO via refocusing IBM on its core strengths (Consulting, SW, and infrastructure focused on Enterprise), BUT AK seems to be failing miserably on holding management to an aggressive sense of urgency. Until management realizes there will be consequences for their performance or more importantly lack of performance, IBM will just muddle along. Gerstner understood this and swung the AX over 18 months to go from 13 levels of management to 7, while also setting new innovation goals and restructuring IBM. AK has to start imposing that sense of urgency as management complacency has been at least 50% of IBM’s problem. AK its been 27 months months and counting and you are no where near imposing that sense of urgency

Good for her, bad for IBM. IBM continually losses great talent due to their inbreeding and arrogant management. Just look at the IBM stock performance the last ten years. So sad.

This could be a bad sign for AK Afterall, IBM pays Barron's to be on every other BS list that excuse for a publication company peddles.
