Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

EM is excellent at turning good employees into bad ones

How? I've seen more than once how good employees who made sure to go the extra mile give up after they get passed for a promotion for the umpteenth time over somebody who barely showed any effort but has the right connections. Now they do the bare minimum as they look for new jobs. Not that I blame them, this one is 100% on EM. Way to lose great employees before they even leave the company...

“EM is excellent at turning good employees into bad ones”

Sorry, but most of you are nowhere near as “good” as you think you are.

That doesn’t justify how you’re being treated by Exxon, I agree that’s awful, but most of you with 10+ years in O&G haven’t learned cutting-edge skills or technologies, and after a few years of fooling around in the field/plant, did little more than generate PPTs and forward emails. A few have built some macros, but nothing to write home about. Many of you skew older and have issues with diversity and the modern workforce in general.

All of the above makes you much less of a catch to a potential hiring manager, especially one who spent a few years working in O&G and knows how cut through the BS many of you put on your résumés.

2 people left from my group. I am now asked to do the job of 3 FTE.

Guess what happened to the quality of the deliverables. “running short on pleople here” is my bread and butter. Everybody else should claim the same.

@jtm+1hFYO0v4 What you're describing there is approximately what used to happen. The new revised system has replaced that with a 'cultural fit' priority and removed the fall from height barriers...! The current ranking system is massively worse than even the prior deficient system.

I didn’t experience this during my 25 years at xom. If you performed well, you were promoted per the hr guidelines. I’ve see low performers go without raises for 5 years. As with an job, you receive what you put into.

If you can solve problems but have no soft skills and can’t present a case for xyz, then you will not be a top performer.

Best of luck to you all.

Management only promote those they are not threatened by, not people for their ability to execute as other companies do.

Agree with OP, I checked out about 12 months ago and I'm just taking the paycheck.

OP is full of sh--e. There is no such thing as “passed over for a promotion” at EM. Promotions are hard coded into the compensation system and are based on YEE, current CL and assessment category. Your supervisor has zero power to influence the formula. If you are assessed poorly, you probably deserved it. I cannot all the entitled little pukes on here posting how they are being screwed. Good god, please quit.

Here is the management take on these worthless workers.
Aggressive bullies equal motivated hard workers
Lazy unproductives equal cautious safe employees
Unmotivated stupid equal teachable maturing for the long run even if it takes their entire career.
Hard working innovative employees equal push them down and say they should be more productive. They expect more from you.

The op is right these favorited employees do nothing but bring the work ethic down. I have seen it many times in the past twenty years. The employees start slacking because the favs do it and get away with it. When good employees do it they are dropped in ranking and when they bring up the fav slackers they are told we're are talking about your performance. Totally not fair. The favs and slackers are held to a different standard. I was told once because I was innovative and creative it was expected of me. I brought up the other workers and was told they have different skill sets and the company expects less from them. The playing field is not level here at ExxonMobil. The frustrated workers just find somewhere else to work. They leave hoping to find some appreciation for their skills and hard work. This company keeps bad workers trying to fix them. What's worse is getting us to try to fix these slackers. I was told a few times to help these workers by giving them helpfull advice and coaching. Once my experienced mentor was the one I was supposed to help. The management does not tell these slacks they are doing anything wrong. Sickening.

@lft+1hFYO0v4 you seem to be the exact type of employee the OP refers to, the privileged, sponsored, perhaps nepotism at play, one that also gaslights, and delivering less than a lot of deserving ones. It is easy to throw stones at others when you are at the height. Id--ts like you have ruined the company, it's culture, and everything.
