Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What changes does ATT need?

Unfortunately, the leadership never listens to the employees, and I believe that some employees could manage this company better than they do.
I'm curious what you think, what changes this company urgently needs? what would you change if you had the power to do it and save this sinking ship?

Employees think they can manage the company because they can whine anonymously. Then they look at their own lives and they know they can't manage anything at all. So back to complaining.

they need to be broken up never should of been allowed to buy the baby bells back

Excuse you, but it's the baby bell SBC that bought AT&T and not the other way around!
SBC got big and successful and needed the global recognition which is why they kept the AT&T name. So, it was the student that finally taught the master, unfortunately, their ambitions got too big for their own good! Here we are today in a pickle!

  1. Divest of all wireline assets - Frontier would probably take them (or some PE firm that specializes in squeezing out the last drops of dying businesses / technologies).
  2. Invest in wireless broadband before it's too late.
  3. Figure out how to get to flat rate billing on wireless (T-mo bought MetroPCS - who figured it out a decade and 1/2 ago).

They need more chiefs of staff, first and foremost. This keeps the right level of PowerPoints flowing through the company. Next, get rid of all the legacy phone plans and replace them with a couple of flat rate plans. This let's you cast off all the insane billing software on the backend and gives the Chiefs of Staff more spreadsheets and power points to do.

Third, decrease the non revenue generating positions like chief of staff. There is way too much tail behind AT&T's tooth in the market. It's no way to be competitive in today's world.

Their goals are not employee goals. They never will be.

This is a fruitless exercise, but I firmly believe that the biggest problem here is the culture.

And the only thing that could change that is sweeping changes at the very highest leadership levels.

And it’s clear to everyone that If that hasn’t happened by now, it ain’t going to happen.

So if the BOD is fine with the performance of this leadership over the last decade…the monumental debt accrued due to failed execution on flawed strategic vision, the erosion of shareholder value sm--k during the longest bill market in history, etc etc. Well, that just sends the message that mediocre and even poor performance
Is fine. The only management that needs to worry about their jobs are the L3 on down folks that have nothing to do with the mistakes at the executive level.

I can’t say for sure what I think the company should do. I can say, however, that many will be layed off, low raises next year and those left will have more work to do. High margin products are being sunsetted, so as the company turns to a fiber & wireless product set they simply cannot afford the number of employees. It’s not going to be a pretty picture the next 1-2 years.

"How about stopping putting pets in chief of staff positions then promoting them for a start. Does anyone think these people are competent? "

You really sound like you are bu-t hurt that some people get designated as COS. Having been in that position myself I can tell you it is not a pet job and is actually very demanding you should maybe try it some time before you spew off on it

Sounds like George Costanza logic! Keep watching those Seinfeld reruns, you’ll go places in this company!

Whatever decision they make, they should do the opposite. If everything they’ve decided to do since divestiture has been wrong, then doing the opposite must be right. Right?

Nothing needs to be done at this point because they already spun off the business units that were a drag on the direction of the company. At this point, just stay the course and watch the revenues just flow in with Mobility, WiFi Services and Business Services. Been with T for a long time, seen many changes, some good, some not. I believe that if T continues to do what it knows best, it will become successful once again!
