Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

SE leaving Cisco have questions

After several years of Cisco employment as a SE, I'm taking a leap of faith and joining a startup. My question - what happens with the equipment I have received over the years (switches, Meraki, etc) - some in use for personal/lab reasons. Is everything expected to be returned or is it a look the other way scenario. Curious what others have experienced recently

If you have a 400G optical transceiver, it would fetch a pretty penny.

The exit paperwork says you are expected to return your employee badge, your corp credit card if you have one, and "all Cisco equipment".

The laptop is tracked, so they'll want it back and will notify your manager if you don't return it. The Asset Team may try to reach out to you if your manager doesn't. They'll report it as "stolen", but not much happens really.

Keyboards, mice, trackpads, monitors, headsets, docking station, etc. are all write-offs and they don't want them back. You can keep them, give them to friends, or put them in the green e-waste bins.

As someone said, the DeskPro's come out of your manager's budget, so he may ask for it back specifically so he doesn't have to buy a replacement DeskPro for your replacement. As mentioned, the Meraki gear licenses get expensive, so dump them or renew the licenses before you leave and make the decision to renew or dump them when the licenses expire.

Switches and lab gear are like the laptop accessories, it's an asset that has been written-off, so it's whatever you want to do with it.

Basic rule of thumb, if it's got Cisco data on it, they want it back. If it's not owned by Cisco, i.e. the leased laptops, they want them back. If it's expensive, and they remember you have it, they might ask for it back. Otherwise, it's written off and you can keep or dispose of it as you wish. They do tend to frown on you selling it on eBay or Facebook however. Have your significant other or a friend post it for you. :-)

Sell it on ebay and make some money

Any Meraki gear you got through the CNMA program is yours, but the licenses are expensive once you leave so I suggest renewing while you still get employee discount.

Desk pros are paid for out of your boss’ budget so they probably will want it back. Laptop goes to IT. Everything is just lost in the system

I left a few months ago. All I had to return was my laptop, I was told I could do what I liked with everything else, it’s a sunk cost. My Deskpro and Meraki kit I kept, all my Cisco kit I put into E-waste in my local office.

Just remember you’ll lose access to all the services you had. I created a personal WxT account and registered my Deskpro to that. Works fine.

I also joined a start-up, much more interesting than what I was doing at Cisco but it’s not all roses.

Interesting. I am doing the same. Leaving for a start-up - resigned last month at Cisco UK. I am sick of the morbid work environment here in Sales org. Could not move internally. Tried. The potential new hiring manager said it was blocked by my current line management and he could not risk start a departmental feud.

I am interested in your experience of a start-up.

You will be asked to return the laptop and they have a process for that. If you have a deskpro and are near an office they might ask for it..or you might meet your manager or a co-worker and turn it over, no real process for that. For everything else your mostly on your own.

Only laptop is mandatory to return as it has Cisco data on it. Cisco can disable the laptop so it is not usable if you don't return it. The docking station, monitors, IP phones, printers, etc are not tracked. If they don't specifically ask you to return them, just keep them (don't sell them or throw them away for at least 2 yrs).
PS: why are you leaving on your own, why not wait for the upcoming LR where Cisco will "pay you to leave"? You can ask your mgr that you would like to volunteer for the LR to save other folks.

I used to be responsible for gathering items from previous employees. They don't care about anything but the laptop usually. If you aren't asked for it, don't worry about it. Cisco doesn't care.

We closed a TAC center once - just threw all the electronics away. The folks in the office got some pretty neat swag though.
