Anger As Ex-Employee Invoiced $0.08 After Leaving Company: 'Insane Charge'

The internet has slammed a company after a former employee revealed how they had received a bill for 8 cents in the post because it should have been taken out of their final paycheck.

A picture of the bill sent to the ex-employee detailing that they must pay 8 cents to their former employer. The small bill has left internet users discussing the best way for the worker to respond.

Shared on Reddit on Tuesday by Jordan Tanner who is from Boise, Idaho, the post included a picture of the bill alongside the caption which read: "My former employer just sent me a bill for 8 cents that they were supposed to take out of my last check. How do I make it as painful as possible for them to collect?"

With more than 26,000 upvotes and thousands of comments, the mean-spirited demand from the former employer sparked interest online.

The invoice shows the outstanding payment required and states: "This invoice reflects an outstanding amount due to IBM Benefits Center for IBM or Kyndryl benefits coverage."

Tanner, who used to work for Taos, an IBM company, told Newsweek: "The letter is saying that they will cancel my health insurance if I do not pay this balance. But this is a former employer so I have already been off of their insurance for several weeks now."

Newsweek has reached out to Taos and IBM for comment.

Tanner posted a picture of the bill on the Reddit community r/antiwork, which offers support with work-related struggles and a space to discuss a work-free lifestyle. The forum features stories such an entitled boss refusing to speak to an employee who resigned or workers walking out after their bonus was halved.

"The sheer gall that they would try to collect 8 cents instead of writing it off as too little to collect is what inspired me to make the post," explained Tanner. "The 8 cents was the amount they were supposed to take out of my last check but forgot for some reason."

In more than 2,700 comments, Redditors shared their thoughts and tips for how the ex-employee could handle the bill.

"Send a cash payment for 1 cent. In a month or so when they send you an updated invoice for 7 cents, send another cash payment for 1 cent," suggested one commenter.

Another commenter suggested: "Just don't pay it and watch and see how much they spend to get you to pay it."

"Send them one of those giant novelty checks," joked another reply.

One commenter suggested that there may have been an error on the company's part.

"I wonder if s*** like this is ever just an admin error," they said. "Like if I was at a new job and my boss just said, 'bill all past employees who owe money.' You'd bet your a-s I'd waste my time sending out an 8-cent statement."

After seeing all of the comments and suggestions, Tanner said: "I plan on calling them and contesting the charges. The more time they spend on this insane charge the better. I hope they ask themselves in the future... was it really worth it?"

To be fair, when I left IBM in 2018 , they said I owed them some money which I paid. Then about a month later, IBM sends me a check for 7 cents. I’m sure it cost them more then 7 cents to send me the check!

  1. Only id--ts would facilitate reddit (et al) moniker matching to real names. (or as with Silk road - same moniker across all social media - was also not a good thing)
  2. Companies with permanent black marks (from HR discussions there are no temporary ones) - I found it far too easy to get one from one company - for an honest mistake - but with that paranoid company - that was it. Interestingly I'm highly recruited by recruiters for that same company.
  3. That said - ALL companies (generally hire service to) track employees posts on any social media handles provided to them. For example once, after a layoff, in a dept meeting the director said "great news - ONLY 10 people discussed this on social media before our public announcement". And that was 15 years ago. Go figure now!

I’d give them 2 cents for sure.

Classic. IBM chases 8 cents, when I personally know they didn’t invoice millions of dollars for services coming from an acquired company’s contracts because of a failed system integration. There years later they figure out their mistake and go to clients scrounging around trying to beg for the money. Spoiler alert, most said no. LoL

I had a phone company bill me for 24 cents for years and years. I finally mailed them a quarter and then they started sending me checks every few months for 1 cent which I never deposited.

They probably spent $10 just in postage.

They can't even process payroll and for whatever reason some(less and less) companies buy services from the incompetent fools. I had the same thing happen with a larger amount that declined with each letter.

IBM wants this to go away just as much as the poster does. It shows their AI is very poor when it can’t determine when to write something off vs putting postage on the outbound mail.

to: @bza+1hOS3aHo - I agree. When you post or report something that belittles the company, no matter how valid, it will work against you when you go job hunting later.

He should just tape 3 x pennies to the invoice and mail it back to the remittance address. Then be done with it.

I have a feeling that this fellow is going to find out the pendulum swings both ways on something like this.

Sure, he made IBM (or maybe Fidelity) look bad, but there is now a black X next to his name in hundreds of HR departments ('has potential to embarrass company), and now his new company can match his real name to his reddit id and see what groups he's been hanging out in (tentacle po-n anyone?).
